i've been enjoying listening to the rain this morning. it rained tuesday night also, which felt very fitting after letting jack go. greg and i took him to our vet in the car. we tried to get a cab, but none would stop. i realize this was a benefit as i think the car was very familiar and kept him calm. at the vet's, i was surprised at how easily everything went. i thought he would get anxious, but he never did. he just laid on my lap while the doctor gave him a sedative in his back leg. greg sat next to me with jack's head in his lap while he fell asleep. after about fifteen minutes we moved him up to the examining table (upon which they had laid two towels), and he slept while the final injection was given to him. it was very peaceful . . though it was difficult for me to believe that he was finally gone, even without his heart beating. maybe it was just stilled for a little while and would start again? maybe it was a drug that quiets down your respiratory system, but then you revive after awhile, like in romeo and juliet? anyway, we stayed for a little while until i thought he looked dead . . and then we went home. korrina came over for dinner and it was nice to be all together.
yesterday, my friend kendall visited, and noticed how the gate was still up that we used to keep jack from wandering through the front bedrooms. it was still up this morning. i only just took it down. we just kept hopping over it as usual.

today, my sister and brother-in-law are coming into town for a conference my brother-in-law will attend. it coincides with a lot of dance and music concerts. they'll come with us friday night to chanda's modern dance recital, and they may sit in on her acting demonstration. today chanda is hoping to dance with some friends at bethesda fountain in central park in celebration of isadora duncan's birthday. it's rainy now, but it's supposed to clear. morgana is getting several projects ready for her parent/child knitting class.

So sorry to hear about Jack! It sounds like the vet's office was very kind to let you be there and stay as long as you needed.

Hi Dorina - I'm so very sorry that good old Jack is gone! You all loved him so much. I'm glad to hear everything went so well, and he surely was a very old, very sick dog, but still it is such a big loss.
ReplyDeleteBig hugs from me. Christine
It was hard when we let go of our cat Holly, she had been with us since Sara was a baby and died four days before Pip's baptism, when Sara was twenty at the time!
ReplyDeleteWe arranged for her to be cremated at a pet cemetry and collected her ashes a few weeks later and they were scattered under one of the apple trees in the garden. We still have the little brass disc with her name engraved on it.
Hope as each day goes by you are feeling a little better.
Much love San and co xxx
No, no rain here, just cool weather. Must come from the ocean then and hasn't reached us.
ReplyDelete(it has been cool here in the mornings and evenings now, eva, but the afternoon gets warm) . .
ReplyDeletethank you everyone for all your warm words and thoughts and stories. i really appreciate it. we've been so busy with recitals and guests and all that i haven't really been able to soak in his absence . . i think i might feel it more next week when things quiet down . . i've been missing xena too! it's a year now since she died.
