st. patrick's day

it's rare that i bake these days, but i felt motivated to revisit my la leche league cookbook (whole foods for the whole family) and baked an irish soda bread . . actually, the recipe made two.

----

there was a beautiful sky this evening when i went out to get a few things for dinner (vegetables from the lifethyme market and corned beef from the butcher) . .

we had a delicious dinner of sandwiches with the soda bread and roasted vegetables (green beans and zucchini).

sunset

the sky has been beautiful lately . .

and the days have been warm and springlike this week (mid to upper 50's).

the cats have been mesmerized with the continuing work on the facade. it's picked up again now that the weather is warmer and it's not raining. i think they may still have to do the window to the left of this one, but the one you see here is finally completely finished. they relaid the outside sill today, after several days waiting for the waterproofing to dry (which smelled terrible and caused us to sleep in a different room).

this weekend

it was a very windy weekend . .

we had trouble figuring out which smoke detector was chirping, indicating a low battery. it ended up being the carbon monoxide detector.

such beautiful light on the buildings driving home . .

sunday poem and sunday night sunset

 displaced

(in memory of edward said)

i am neither in nor out.
i am in between.
i am not part of anything.
i am a shadow of something.
at best,
i am a thing that
does not really
exist.
i am weightless,
a speck of time
in gaza.
but i will remain
where i am.

thursday evening

it was 58 degrees F today, which felt quite warm and spring-like. i walked to the water park in the late afternoon to meet up with kendall and aurélien.

even though it was warm, it was a quiet day at the park and the setting sun cast a warm amber glow over our world.

----

(afterwards, i visited faicco's for a pre-made dinner (broccoli rabe and sausage and italian bread) and also bought another musi tomaso panettone with candied cherries and no citron as morgan is allergic to citrus peel and citrus oil.)

 ----

i also finally finished this book before going out (it needed to go back to the library). i hadn't read the last one and a half chapters . . the chapters that dealt with dewey's older years and his decline. it was very sad and i cried before closing the book and packing it in my bag to be returned.

here . . and there

this morning it was my turn to sit out in my car and wait for the street cleaner . . who didn't come today either! i saw him pass by on other streets, but he decided to not bother with the cobble stoned street i was parked on. that was fine by me. i worked on my sock knitting and listened to knitting podcasts and watched the rain come down.

out on montauk my sister's family has been working hard . . here my brother-in-law is treating the deck . .

my sunset photo from the bedroom window . .

and the book i read today, which i recommend. i read it along with black coffee with white friends, a book discussion group which is hosted on the good reads website. marcie, the leader of the book discussion, has a blog which can be found here, which is filled with book recommendations (found here), shared experiences, history, personal stories, and important conversations (particularly the one here). it's a good introduction to learning about the experience of black americans. it's important to know . . to listen, to learn, and marcie's voice is honest and accepting. this is the link for the book club.

dinner tonight was bratwurst from the butcher with zucchini and potatoes sautéed in butter, and fresh cucumber and radish.

it's slowly getting dark earlier, and i've begun occasionally lighting a candle again.

cold and grey days

it was another cold and grey morning. chanda and i sat and read about limestone and she planned out her lesson page for monday.

then we stopped at "rebel coffee" which used to be the chocolate bar. she hadn't been yet and wanted to see what it was like. it's still really nice to sit down in, but we miss the hot chocolate and ice cream and chocolate covered pretzels. however, this place has really good coffee and good mochas . . so maybe we'll begin to like it just as much. also, the guy who owns it is often there serving, which is nice. (the knitting project on my lap is a blue shawl for nana for her birthday).

looking at color combinations for yet another leotard . .

chanda's feet have grown . . more wide! the flat ballet shoes we ordered online were too narrow for her chubby feet so we went to gaynor minden today to see if they had anything that might fit.

they didn't have anything . . at the moment.

a sunset pic on my way home to make dinner . .

our neighbor victoria and her dog alfred. we talked a little with our neighbor crystal whose father is undergoing surgery for brain cancer. we said we would keep them in our prayers.
