almost october

it's beginning to feel very fall-like in the neighborhood.

after the green market today, i accompanied kendall and aurélien to an open house at a nearby music school.

(it was very rainy again today.)

they also offer art classes and they have a nice courtyard for the children to run around in.

dinner tonight was fresh codfish, sautéed broccoli and fingerling sweet potatoes (first time having the latter - i had never seen them before).

i wonder if we'll be able to see the moon tonight . .

michaelmas

st. michael's harvest song
in autumn saint michael with sword and with shield
passes over meadow and orchard and field.
he's on the path to battle 'gainst darkness and strife --
he is the heavenly warrior protector of life . .

----

it poured today and there was a lot of flooding in different neighborhoods. korrina made it to grand central, but turned around at the 6th train platform as it was packed with people. red hook, carroll gardens and probably other areas too, were inundated with the water coming up to the middle of cars and several train lines were shut down.

zuzu has lately taken to running around like a nut and scampering up the window to perch on the ledge. does she think she's st. michael, ready to battle the evil forces?

it's too cloudy and rainy tonight for us to see the harvest perigee moon.

rain shower

i stopped at trader joe's after vision therapy today and was caught in a rain shower. i hadn't brought an umbrella with me so finally just decided to walk home in the drizzle. it wasn't pouring like the times i was caught in 2021 when greg gallantly rescued me (i was a drowned rat several times that year).

i passed this construction also when i was walking home. the juxtaposition of it next to the church felt a bit . . i don't know what adjective i'd like to use. something about it's spindly and unfinished facade seemed so out of place with the apartment building, the church and the tree. i'm not a fan of all the skinny and tall buildings that have been going up, but i'll probably get used to them. it'll be interesting to see how it looks when completed.
(there are supposed to be height restrictions in historical neighborhoods, which is where i believe this building stands.)

birthday morning for pluto

it's pluto's birthday today. he's five years old now.

fifth day of rain

it drizzled all day. i went out to help ellen with her class for five year olds, and had to run upstairs as i had forgotten an umbrella and definitely needed it.

i stopped at a new matcha place on mulberry street on my way to meet greg who had been returning a router to verizon (they had sent us a new one) on delancey street.

i guess we couldn't resist stopping at lombardi's for pizza and a caesar salad for dinner . . and i guess i couldn't resist getting a vanilla italian soda.

( we have leftovers to take home for lunch and dinner tomorrow . . !)

we were here to celebrate my birthday in june . . it's getting dark much earlier now.

pics from a blustery day

i was surprised at the strength of the wind when i went out today, even though i had heard it howling outside the windows overlooking the courtyard.

i heard a man say into his cell phone, it's our fourth day of rain.

no mad flood stories. just rain and clouds, mist and fog.

another grey and rainy day

we have another blustery day. when i looked at the radar on the weather app, it showed a large storm system moving past us to the northeast. i think it's still part of ophelia. it's cold! i have a sweater and socks on and need to re-organize my clothes drawers. instead, i was going through old photos from the trip to london last year, and posted about the second morning there. that's all i got through. the second morning. i have thirteen and one half days to go. it feels daunting, but i am determined.
(i think my neighbor upstairs either has her grown son and daughter living with her now or a new boyfriend. during covid they turned their living room into a gym with bar bells and an exercise bike. for the past year it's been quiet, but lately it sounds like they're either playing basketball or they adopted a herd of elephants. i wrote her once that when she bounces around it shakes the entire apartment down here . . i'm not sure it did any good . . )

there are current political situations which i'm distraught about . . i guess that is ongoing . . seemingly never ending in too many places . . i'm just upset that there is no help from our government or from the united nations. it is agonizing . . horrifying . . and people are truly suffering.

the above bowl holds homemade beef stock with meat from the marrow, neck and knuckle bones. i hadn't made it in a long time. the salt is from austria and feels very healthy to have with the broth.
i don't know how to label this post.

this sunday's poem and brunch in queens

happiness

there's just no accounting for happiness,
or the way it turns up like a prodigal
who comes back to the dust at your feet
having squandered a fortune far away.
and how can you not forgive?
you make a feast in honor of what
was lost, and take from its place the finest
garment, which you saved for an occasion
you could not imagine, and you weep night and day
to know that you were not abandoned,
that happiness saved its most extreme form
for you alone.
no, happiness is the uncle you never
knew about, who flies a single-engine plane
onto the grassy landing strip, hitchhikes
into town, and inquires at every door
until he finds you asleep midafternoon
as you so often are during the unmerciful
hours of your despair.

it comes to the monk in his cell,
it comes to the woman sweeping the street
with a birch broom, to the child
whose mother has passed out from drink.
it comes to the lover, to the dog chewing
a sock, to the pusher, to the basketmaker,
and to the clerk stacking cans of carrots
in the night.
it even comes to the boulder
in the perpetual shade of pine barrens,
to rain falling on the open sea,
to the wineglass, weary of holding wine.

----

tropical storm ophelia is still passing through so it's been alternating pouring and drizzling with brief interludes when one can walk without an umbrella. greg and i drove out to queens to see korrina and josh for a late breakfast.

it began pouring when we arrived so we visited the closest restaurant to their apartment, the skillman, where we've been before. i also chose the same dish i had at that time, ricotta pancakes. so good! (very fluffy.) greg and korrina both had the irish breakfast and josh had a burger.

we took a walk to the pet store to see if they had a particular pheromone spray korrina once bought there, to help with my three crazy cats (zuzu and pluto could use a little help staying calm with each other). (they didn't have it . . i'll have to look it up online - feliway thunderease.)

we passed this beautiful community garden . .

and these three lovely women who were just leaving after having gardened all morning. they were very friendly and encouraged korrina to come and visit and get involved. i think korrina feels a little too busy with work, but it would be nice. it's so lush and so . . convenient!

the woman with the black umbrella is heidi, and the others introduced themselves but i've forgotten their names, which frustrates me. i'm usually quite good at remembering names. (and korrina remembered their names, rita and joy.)

it was a fun afternoon.

photos from chanda! she had a very rainy and blustery visit to plum island . .

she said they were very cold and got very wet. i hope she still has vitamin c powder to take when she gets back to the dorm.

a wet saturday - autumnal equinox

happy autumn! the sun crossed the celestial equator at 2:50 am this morning . . our nights will now be longer than our days. i'll miss the long summer days . . !

and it was a rainy day at the green market . . mariebelle (k's housekeeper who just returned from guatemala where she said it was soooo hot and sticky!) and i helped kendall and aurélien carry up several wet bags to their apartment, after which i then picked out some zucchini, okra, carrots and corn, flounder and scallops. aurélien had been insisting on going to the playground, but when mariebelle turned up, he was happy to stay home and help her clean. i think kendall was relieved because no one was at the playground and it was extremely wet. i'm not sure how pleased mariebelle was! no, i'm sure she was fine. she's so good with him and he loves her. kendall will keep him from bothering her too much . . and he'll probably spend the whole time she's there vacuuming! he loves to vacuum.

tropical storm ophelia is passing by . .

i'm really enjoying the rainy day today.

when i took this pic, i woke pluto from his rainy day nap.

----

chanda sent several photos from her field trip to plum island today. it's a bit wet, but wildly beautiful . .

she says it's cold too . .

----

and morgan's harley sent photos of her two cats:

i've never seen such a fluffy black cat! her name is cobwebs and harley says she's a bit feral.

and this is summer, the mama cat to cobwebs above.

i also spoke with kathy today. it was her birthday (greg and i sang happy birthday into their message machine - they had been out to the new britain art museum and yesterday they had been biking in willimantic where they saw a blue heron, an osprey and an eagle catch a fish in the river . . quite an adventurous day!)
