we went to the metropolitan museum of art today. we were going to do one of the family art trek tours, (it was in the brochure as being appropriate for 7 to 12 year olds), but when we got there the speaker lowered it down to 5 to 10 year olds. we thought it would be good for chanda, and morgana and i could tag along and listen, however, the tour guide became bogged down in responding to the 5 and 6 year olds and we lost interest. we hooked up with a tour about the competitive nature of the greek world in relation to prize amphora and sculpture. the speaker was jean sorak and she was very interesting. we all picked an object to sketch and observed what a steady and fine hand the amphora painters had, and how the marble statues couldn't give quite the same delicate detail as a bronze (which i had never thought about . . they both seem rather cumbersome to work with to me!).
morgana chose to sketch the wounded amazon (the bronze original would have been able to show the blood dripping from the wound under her right arm more clearly), and chanda chose to sketch the amphora with a harp player attributed to the berlin painter, however she didn't include his harp player . . just the jar!
afterwards, we visited roman girl at a fountain by leon bonnat. chanda is working on a dance about it with some lovely italian folk music.
we also visited the starn brothers' big bambu exhibit on the met's roof. it's a beautiful piece (the pictures they have of it going up on their website are astounding).
if you get to the museum early, you can stand in line for tickets for a walking tour. we haven't done this yet . . but it would be quite an experience! it seems a little scary to me . . as the path goes right to the edge! of course m and c thought it would be the best! we didn't have the appropriate shoes on . . they require closed toe and heel . . we have until october 31st (weather permitting!). the museum's website also has some nice photos of the process, and an interview with the curator and the artists.
the girls commented on how peaceful and calm bambu felt. the wood has an easy energy and gives a lovely shade to the hot roof. they were remembering how hot it was for last year's roof exhibit, maelstrom. it was interesting to compare the two mediums, bamboo and stainless steel.

after being in the museum all day, and in the air conditioning, it felt good to stretch our legs and feel the warm (hot!) air on our skin. we ended up walking all the way down fifth avenue to 40th street (past patience and fortitude and bryant park) and the 2, 3 train at seventh avenue. we also passed by the children's gate (one of twenty gates into central park).
when we got home, morgana finished up her science experiment by sketching her observations of the dried epsom salt crystals.
