voting on halloween

 
i was feeling better today and walked with chanda to the voting site. they were giving out special stickers for voting on halloween.

she was able to get one for me too and i've stuck it onto my ipad cover. isn't it cute! the nyc pigeon is wearing a witch's hat and holding a jack o'lantern in its beak.

i walked home along sixth avenue which had all the barriers out for the halloween parade this evening.

it was so warm today (i think it went up to 79 or 80) that i wore my sandals and a short sleeved shirt. it felt like spring or summer.

i never did bake the butternut squash and "pie pumpkin" i had bought for a pumpkin pie, so i made joe frogger cookies for dessert. the recipe is from sturbridge village and they are baked with flour, sugar, butter, molasses, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves. the story is that they were named by joe brown and his wife lucretia who operated a tavern in marblehead, massachusetts. you can read about it on the yankee magazine website, which also includes the recipe. an interesting and more informative account can be found on the smithsonian website.

sick day, construction work and photos from morgan

i went to sleep last night with a sore throat and woke achy and tired. it was good i didn't go anywhere as they finally got to our windows for the facade work that has been happening on our building and i was able to make sure to close off the bedrooms so the noise wasn't as disruptive. the blue tarp you see in the window is on a suspended platform the workers use when drilling.

the cats were a bit confused and did not like the noise . .

i mainly did laundry today . . and washed our warm blanket for the bed (it's finally cool enough at night).

morgan and harley are visiting austria this week and sent this beautiful photo of the mountains.

dinner tonight was sautéed zucchini, cod fillet and potatoes.

dinner last night with greg at a mexican place on 7th avenue. i had enchiladas mole and greg had enchaladas tomatilla. both so good!

walking home . . it's been warm again. we still haven't put the heat on or changed to warmer blankets. i still have summer blankets on the beds!

the teal cotton sweater i made finally wound its way to austria and onto the sweet child it was meant for. morgan knitted the hat. as you can see both will fit for another month or two and then i think they will be too small. i'm glad the items made it in time to be worn! and maybe they will be handed down to another child in the future?

morgan finished knitting the hat for her austrian family's new grand baby, and i believe the package has been mailed off. it came out nice and i think it looks great.

she sewed the buttons on the sweater too . . (remember, i hadn't done that part). the buttons are so cute.

and she was glad i sent her this little made with love label. i can't remember where it's from! maybe it came with the buttons . .

adam had been out at the house with my sister and brother-in-law and sent this little video of the beach . . such a beautiful blue. (and all our family and friends survived hurricane milton safely.)

the new little baby in morgan's austrian host family finally received her purple nyc onesie that i picked out last fall! it's good i bought a large size. morgan is back in london now.

happy june! it was a warm day . . it went up to 82.

the weekend

the operator arm for the broken window at the house arrived during the week and greg installed it saturday. i am so relieved because now we don't have to get a whole new window.

cricket always has to investigate . . 

we also had a visitor . . a little fawn was born on the side of the house a few days or so ago and ensconced itself in the sprinkler well. i observed it nursing with its mother from the bedroom window and then she went away and he settled down. i found information online about the habits of white tailed deer and we avoided mowing the lawn where it was resting. i only did a quarter of the front lawn as i didn't want to cause stress or spook the mother into abandoning it.

sunday afternoon we had a lovely visit with korrina, josh and josh's mom (at her place in the next town over). we had a delicious salad with grilled chicken along with italian cookies that we had brought and pastries from his mom's local bakery. the weather alternated clouds and sun and fog . . 

so much fog!

korrina went for a swim and sent two photos of the foggy shore:

back at the house with the little rascals . . 

i also finished the lawn mowing as the fawn was no longer in the well. when we first got back i had noticed  the mother deer heading into the little wooded area . . i figured she must have moved him there.

it was a cool foggy evening . . and the mowing and subsequent raking up of the grass clippings was very meditative.

we headed home early this morning . . hoping to beat traffic. we stopped at the bakery where the delicious pastries came from yesterday . .
