another ikea excursion

 

my beautiful droopy sunflowers my cousin cindy sent home with my sister for me. i missed getting a photo when they were bright and cheery.

 

this sunday was another ikea visit. we needed to exchange a window curtain for the correct size and morgan wanted to buy a bookshelf which can also be used as a dresser (i'll have to take a photo to show how it was put together and arranged).

we had several large bags of chanda's winter clothes in the car that had been sitting at home waiting for some nice people to drive them out to her . . so we stopped by . . also, morgan hadn't seen her apartment yet and was looking forward to visiting.

i like her new curtains and the photos that she's hung on the wall . . 

it also was wonderful to see sweet pluto.

 my favorite song this morning from first unitarian of brooklyn's service was when our heart is in a holy place (sung by first unitarian church of baltimore above). the first U choir sings it with the congregation at 1:18 on the video on their facebook page here.

gifts from korrina and morgan . . rose flavored turkish delight, russian caravan tea from fortnum and mason, postcards for the nature table, a family cookbook and two crafting items i found online in the u.k. and had sent to morgan's flat: buttons and mohair (five skeins for $18!).

chanda's room is slowly taking shape . . morgan has been helping from afar with the furniture arrangement.

in the morning greg and i had helped kendall park the car and unload aurélien and all the bags from her trip upstate, and then i met her for a grocery shop and a short visit . . 

after which greg and i had dinner at tavern on jane (they finally set up their outdoor tables again).

moving day

we were all up early getting ready to move chanda to brooklyn. i had made muffins last night, and this morning i made sandwiches for greg, chanda and her friend who helped with moving boxes, furniture and bags into the new space. i'll be holding the fort down here with pluto until he goes with her in the second or third trip.

pluto was very interested and sniffed every bag and box until i gave him his second breakfast.

a new month . . they seem to go by so fast.

greg went to get the car and then i sat with it while everything was carried downstairs and loaded in. i really have not gotten far on this project (napkins for chanda from the cascade pima cotton). i think i'm going to change to a size three needle from the size four.

when i came back upstairs pluto was being his usual doorstop self so that i could hardly get in . . and had to squeeze through a very narrow opening.

 

as you can see, family and friends are forewarned when entering.

at least the weather is much cooler today. in fact i needed to wear a sweater.

the rain poured down in buckets on the way home and the thunder is rolling through as i write this.

into brooklyn and a concert at carnegie hall

chanda and i drove into brooklyn this morning to pick up korrina and go shopping at the coop together.

 it was a lot of fun driving through different neighborhoods. brooklyn is so vast! she lives on a lovely street with big beautiful trees and pretty houses and apartment buildings. going from neighborhood to neighborhood as we drove to the coop was incredibly interesting and fun; especially as we neared our old neighborhood and began recognizing the streets we always passed returning from being out of town. they planted trees on vanderbilt avenue down the center of the two lanes. it really looks nice. we did a quick (and large!) shop at the coop and then we dropped korrina off at her job interview. she trailed at a restaurant in cobble hill in the kitchen. we found out this evening that she liked it so much she accepted their job offer and will start work on tuesday. she'll first work for two more weeks at her old place every sunday and monday, and then be full time at . . . (drum roll please) . . van horn.

on the way, along flushing avenue, we passed this church amidst mechanic shops and industrial work buildings. all the residential buildings are along the streets branching off. i researched online and found out that it's all saint's parish of brooklyn built in 1894 for a german immigrant community that had been together since 1868. the windows now depict the site in tepeyac, mexico where many believe st. juan domingo met the virgin of guadalupe, reflecting the new immigrant population that has replaced the old. it's nice that the congregation has continued.

in the evening we attended morgana's guitar orchestra concert in the weill recital hall at carnegie hall. it was a very nice concert, but i'm still confused as to who sponsored it and how her music school, third street, was connected with the sponsoring organization. there were original student compositions played by the faculty, and original compositions by dina koston and harold meltzer (who was there). i think someone was connected with the dina koston young artists program and third street and decided to get the students together. what's funny is that i can't find any information about what the dina koston young artist's program is. hmmmmmm . .  i guess i'd like to know whose idea it was and how he or she got everyone together . . just . . . curious!

eva just found a website that explains more about dina koston and the young artists program which is dedicated to enriching the rehearsal and performance experience in a young musician's life. dina named the sponsoring fund after her husband, roger shapiro. you can read about it here.

 morgana has always wanted to play in an "orchestra" so this was special for her.

the pieces they performed were electric counterpoint by steve reich, and cuban landscape with rain by leo brouwer.

korrina in her apartment

the car was very full when we loaded it this evening with korrina's boxes and bags and containers, so she and greg went without chanda and i (morgana was at a play). her roommate took this pic. she's very happy to be on her own . . and i'm sure we'll miss her! we've already made plans for her to come to dinner on monday.
