heat and haze

 

i was out earlier than usual to walk milly as it was supposed to go up to the high 90's . . which it did - stopping at 98 degrees. but even though it was cooler at 10:30 in the morning (only 93), the air was terrible. the dewpoint and humidity were high and all the dust and debris from the local construction was just hanging in the air (double townhouse renovations and parking garages being converted into luxury apartments). my throat was sore from breathing it in. as the day progressed, the wildfire smoke moved in. 

daisies by the morton williams supermarket on la guardia place. i stopped in to see if they had a bottle brush that i could use for cleaning our flower vases. fortunately, they did.

the light this evening was yellowish brown and heavy. i put the air on and chanda and the cats were much happier.

it was very hot today so we tried staying in the shade as we took our time walking to soho. along the way we passed a mural artist working on a new piece at macdougal street.

everyone was intrigued.

i bought a peach iced tea again from fellini and milly received a treat.

after walking milly i met chanda for pluto's annual vet check up.

our vet and the technician loved him as he was so sweet and quiet and dr. goldberg declared him to be in good health.

but without an explanation so i'm not sure yet who this dog is.

i posted about rejoining the food coop here, the vote at the coop here, and about dining at korrina's restaurant here, and there are other days in between.

i also tried to take a photo of the beautiful full moon . . well, it's not completely full anymore though it still looks quite full. it's been rising later so i haven't seen it when first falling asleep. i woke at 3 am and saw it bathing the room with its silvery light. this was the blue moon, the second full moon of may (may first and may thirty first).

before i walked milly today i rode a citibike downtown to visit the mah ze dahr cafe at brookfield place. i had seen on their instagram story that they were closing their counter at the food court and today was their last day. they used to have a storefront on greenwich avenue but they left that space a few years ago. (i had visited there many times with marisa, and also with korrina, morgana and chanda.) so today i thought i would go and have one last treat and cup of tea. a worker behind the counter mentioned that they might open a new space near hudson yards in september.

it was another warm day. milly was not happy that she had to wear her sunshirt, but her fur is thin on her back and we don't want her to get sunburned. she looks quite pitiful here, doesn't she? povera milly!

i don't have any other photos of our walk. no tulips, magnolias, or daffodils today. i noticed that the redbud trees are beginning to sprout, and the cherry trees went from bare to bursting! i think i should get out with my camera tomorrow . . 

i did buy a delicious and refreshing peach iced tea at fellini . . and milly was not neglected. she snacked on the treats i had in my pocket while i sipped my tea.

greg made deviled eggs from the leftover dyed easter eggs we had brought back from connecticut. it was the perfect night for a cold supper (i remember many cold suppers with my parents and my sister on our screened in porch when i was little and it was too hot to sit inside). we also had a kale salad with pomegranate seeds.

(i think it went up to 89 today!)

kathy and warren have been in vermont having a belated birthday celebration with jason.

it looks like his birthday gift was a beatles album and a paul simon album. they probably went together to pick them out at the used record store.

david hammons, days end, 2014-21, stainless steel and precast concrete. it's a physical outline of an old warehouse that used to sit in this exact spot. the artist gordon matta-clark would cut large openings in the structure. the second photo below has a picture of one of his renderings.

this afternoon, after walking milly, i finished my reading for the classical literature class i'm taking at the library, rewriting/repurposing classical plays with professor judith miller who taught at nyu. there are fourteen people in the class and it's been really fun. oedipus rex (sophocles) was discussed the first week; week two was incendies by wajdi mouawad (inspired by oedipus rex); and tomorrow will be the tempest by william shakespeare. everyone has much to say!

speaking of toques, korrina was reminiscing today and posted a photo of her medallion from achieving the top toque award at her culinary graduation . . ten years ago today!

dogs, cats, windows and a play

i visited the green market this morning where i talked with kendall and aurélien, and karl and victor at the fish stand. i bought apples, kale, spring onions, an aged hard cheese from the cheese vendor and . . (drum roll please) strawberries! yes, the first strawberries appeared and chanda and i quickly devoured them. they were expensive and i always complain about the particular farm stand that sells them because they never completely fill the green paper container. but . . i still bought them and though i griped and said i wouldn't buy from there again this season . . i'm sure i will.

milly's owners asked me to walk her today as they weren't going to be home, so i went over around noon. when we came back i realized she had had an accident on the couch blanket she sleeps on and had also vomited some food by her dog bed. her owners are expecting a baby and i think milly is feeling the coming transition.

greg was determined to fix our window screen today. i'm not sure if you remember that the cats pulled in a mourning dove in the fall and there had been a big hole in the screen ever since (yes, the poor dove died. greg and chanda found it over by the big chair, next to the bed. i'm not sure where they buried it. i think i had been at the studio helping ellen. such drama and tragedy!)

pluto tried to help but greg was not appreciative!

cricket and zuzu were put away as they would have tried to get out when i was cleaning the window. it was so dusty from all the construction work that only recently ended.

this is zuzu checking out the handiwork and sniffing all the good outdoor smells. even having the window open this far can be a problem when the mourning doves sit on the sill, oblivious to the danger inside. we're going to get an additional portable window screen that you can buy at home depot. it'll fit in snug with the window holding it down and they shouldn't be able to get their paws pushed through two screens, hopefully.

after a dinner of taco leftovers, we walked to the irish repertory company to see irishtown.

 

it was very funny and it felt wonderful to laugh. we both really enjoyed it and greg says he would like to read it. we might go to the drama book store one week to see if they have it. i haven't been there in ages.

we had ice cream at julietta's before heading home. i had chocolate and vanilla. greg had pistachio, mint chip and lemon sorbet.

it was a nice evening out. i really enjoy the shows at irish rep. (p.s. the moon is beautiful tonight.)
