warm days, a cafe visit and a card game

after the few chilly nights last weekend and the chilly autumn air of monday, this week it's been back to warm and humid summertime weather. the cats and i have felt quite soporific again (and it was a little difficult sleeping at night - no cool breeze!).

i did manage to walk cross town to visit with my friend sacha at cafe abraço. (it was such a nice visit and we caught up on all our news.) (i checked for chestnut honey at the health food store and at raffetto's, but neither place had it - here's hoping they replenish the supply soon!).

i walked home along houston street to see what was happening with the feast of san gennaro . . everyone was busy setting up for the grand opening which was this evening. greg and i hope to visit sometime next week.

it was so warm this evening that i didn't feel like cooking . . so we just had sandwiches . . 

we're up to round four in our "may i" game. so far i've been in the lead . . here's hoping i can maintain this streak!

pets and a new mural in soho

 

ready for our walk . . 

it was very hot today so we tried staying in the shade as we took our time walking to soho. along the way we passed a mural artist working on a new piece at macdougal street.

everyone was intrigued.

i bought a peach iced tea again from fellini and milly received a treat.

after walking milly i met chanda for pluto's annual vet check up.

our vet and the technician loved him as he was so sweet and quiet and dr. goldberg declared him to be in good health.

but without an explanation so i'm not sure yet who this dog is.

i posted about rejoining the food coop here, the vote at the coop here, and about dining at korrina's restaurant here, and there are other days in between.

i also tried to take a photo of the beautiful full moon . . well, it's not completely full anymore though it still looks quite full. it's been rising later so i haven't seen it when first falling asleep. i woke at 3 am and saw it bathing the room with its silvery light. this was the blue moon, the second full moon of may (may first and may thirty first).

the crocuses have popped up in our tree pit gardens.

we went by the river . . it was wonderfully sunny . .

david hammons, days end, 2014-21, stainless steel and precast concrete. it's a physical outline of an old warehouse that used to sit in this exact spot. the artist gordon matta-clark would cut large openings in the structure. the second photo below has a picture of one of his renderings.

this afternoon, after walking milly, i finished my reading for the classical literature class i'm taking at the library, rewriting/repurposing classical plays with professor judith miller who taught at nyu. there are fourteen people in the class and it's been really fun. oedipus rex (sophocles) was discussed the first week; week two was incendies by wajdi mouawad (inspired by oedipus rex); and tomorrow will be the tempest by william shakespeare. everyone has much to say!

i passed this mural on second street today . . 

and also popped into this little cookbook shop (which was just up the block from the mural) and had a nice chat with the owner who was very friendly and talking with each customer that wandered in. she had a paper list of all the local independent bookstores in the neighborhood. i was looking for the horn of the moon cookbook, but she said she sold her copy a few years ago. i think strand might have it.

i then wandered to the east village health food store, and then met kendall at the union square green market to say hello. (her sister showed up at the same time . . just out of the blue, thinking she would see kendall there - how serendipitous!) i picked up chestnut honey for marisa and a few things for the week (broccoli for dinner tonight).

i passed this interesting and amazing sculpture on my way to the dentist this morning (by bruno catalano: patrons of park avenue).

on the way home i realized it was lunchtime and chanda was out of class . . i stopped at breads cafe for lunch for us (tuna and egg salad with bread on the side, and a spinach/feta bureka).

it was nice to sit with her in the school's courtyard . . 

i've also spent a lot or time putting together a post about the morning of september 18th in 2022 when we were in london . . and here's the afternoon.

after the rain i felt like getting italian sausages to have with the peppers in the refrigerator, left over from last saturday's green market visit.

i sent a few pics to korrina . . i had questions about the strings on the sausage and how long they should cook for . . she reminded me i had made it for christmas and it had turned out so good. i ended up simmering them on low for thirty minutes . .
