breakfast at hudson hound with greg . . he had never been before.
by day the blue will pale down into white where it touches the white of the land, after sunset it has a new circumference-orange, melting upwards into tenderest purple. but the core of blue persists, and so it is by night. then the stars hang like lamps from the immense vault. the distance between the vault and them is as nothing to the distance behind them, and that farther distance, though beyond colour, last freed itself from blue. -e.m. forster (a passage to india)

morning poem and sunday afternoon
the trees
the trees are coming into leaf
like something almost being said;
the recent buds relax and spread,
their greenness is a kind of grief.
is it that they are born again
and we grow old? no, they die too,
their yearly trick of looking new
is written down in rings of grain.
yet still the unresting castles thresh
in fullgrown thickness every may.
last year is dead, they seem to say,
begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

chanda and i met marlene for brunch at hudson hound this afternoon at 1 pm. it was great to see her. she's teaching her teen class this semester at hb again.
i also met kendall and aurélien coming home from upstate and helped them bring their bags up to the apartment. she lucked out with a good parking spot!

sunny and windy
it was such a beautiful day today . . sunny, cool - but not cold, windy and clear and not a cloud in the sky.
we walked up to chelsea square diner and met ron and andy for brunch. i had delicious fresh squeezed orange juice which i made andy try and then smiled because he immediately sighed and said, "oh, this reminds me of california." fresh orange juice does the same for me . . i always remember visiting my uncle in woodland hills and he suggesting in the morning that i go outside and pick a few oranges to squeeze on the little rotating electric juicer. now fresh orange juice never fails to take me back to those days.
(i also had huevos rancheros, one of my favorite diner breakfast dishes.) we also discussed plans for the wedding in july . . they still have to get their plane tickets as do korrina, chanda and my cousin and her husband.
afterwards, they walked with us one block to pet central to look at kitty litter containers.
we then went our separate ways . .
greg and i walked along 23rd to petsmart on broadway near the flatiron where they had a litter tray we thought would be good.
on the way home we passed julietta's . .

it was such a beautiful morning and all the cherry trees have been in bloom.

step into hopper

do you remember the edward hopper exhibit last year? this weekend they set up scenes from three of his paintings.
i thought this man looked as if he had just walked out of one the paintings . .
waiting in line for a turn . .

breakfast at oscar's earlier today . .
kind of like dining in a hopper painting . .

more about sunday

a few weeks ago i signed up for another online cooking class with fabrizia lanza whose mother began a cooking school in sicily in the 1980's. (i made almond thumbprint cookies with them in 2020.) this time she was making ravioli from her new cookbook the food of sicily.
the ravioli flour needed to sit for 30 minutes before rolling out, so they suggested making it ahead of time.
i understood the class description to be that fabrizia would show us how she rolls out the dough with a rolling pin, which i was looking forward to seeing . . however, she had a pasta machine into which she dipped her dough, as did the other twenty class participants. i was the lone hand roller. she said i was very brave. i was not amused. nevertheless, i persevered and created very nice ravioli, even if they were a bit lopsided and rough around the edges.
after the class, i had to quickly pack everything away as we drove out to queens for brunch with korrina and josh . .
chanda joined us (she had been at a friend's place in brooklyn) at one of my favorite eating spots, dawa.
their dishes are all handmade by a local potter and are beautiful to drink and eat from . . (to the left above is their delicious grapefruit salad).
my fried cauliflower with spicy, crisp chickpea batter and purple rice.
korrina had pulled noodles, beef and daikon in a bone marrow broth and chanda had black chickpeas with sunny side up eggs, fried puff dough and tomato achaar. greg had baked eggs with sour dough bread, potatoes and veggies, and josh had tibetan beef patties.
sharing a mochi-like dessert with a red bean stuffing . .
korrina finished knitting her sweater . .
it's a quince yarn . . maybe sparrow.
chanda's treats from korrina (from the brooklyn yarn crawl).
we stopped at the new zero waste shop where i bought a few ounces of chili flakes, a vegetable brush and delicious chocolate covered cherries. it was a fun afternoon.
----
back at home . . i put away my ravioli dough . .
and the ravioli . .
i'll roll out the remainder tomorrow.
