late summer beach days

 

  greg, i and morgana drove out to montauk early sunday morning for a three day visit (passing the shinnecock canal above).

 

it was a grey and rainy afternoon when we arrived, so we just went for a walk along the beach at ditch.

 

dinner from the take out restaurant hooked (i had fish tacos) . . we also played a few rounds of may i (greg is enjoying it much more these days, so it's easier to get him to play).

 ----

 

 

 we spent monday swimming at the bay  . .

 

and had a picnic lunch.

my current summer reading . . 

dewey, the small town library cat who touched the world, by vicky myron. kathy recommended this book to me and i'm really enjoying it. it takes place in spencer, iowa and tells the story of finding dewey as a kitten in the book drop and how he came to befriend the patrons of the town's library, and how the town grew from that relationship. the author also shares her story of being a single working mom and how dewey helped foster a connection between her and her daughter. it's very inspiring and i highly recommend it. i'm also enjoying learning about the town of spencer and how it has changed throughout the years, and how its townspeople were able to work together to pull themselves out of difficulties and keep the town viable. (this is very much an adult book with fun parts that can be read to children about dewey the cat and his adventures.)

we visited the shops at gosman's dock (we always like looking through the homeport store) and picked up some fish (fluke), potatoes and asparagus from the fish store for dinner.

(before dinner we mowed the lawn.) 

 

we also had delicious fresh tomatoes from our farmer at home that we had brought along. 

as it grew dark while eating, we noticed a bat flying around. it was good to see that they still come by; i hadn't noticed them in a long time. (i've read articles in the past few years describing a decline in bugs and bats.) it was also a clear night to see the milky way and we picked out saturn in the eastern night sky. the moon also rose high enough to shine on the water, just west of the tree adam trimmed. i have the h.a. rey book at the house, and we were consulting it for the early september star positions.

tuesday morning morgan and i visited the sag harbor variety store to pick out some sugar and cream yarn for knitted napkins.

and also visited the library as morgan hadn't seen it since its renovation.

and then a swim at the beach . .

we stopped to get dosas at hampton chutney on the way home and got in around 10 pm . . the usual time.

and chanda and i had the nicest afternoon on wednesday swimming and reading on the beach.

 

wednesday night dinner: mussels and fish and chips from hooked.

thursday morning . . (i did sheets and towels in the washer)

and started a new sock project (oysters and purls yarn) with coffee and carrot cake from mah ze dahr bakery . .

pluto napped on the chair that i was leaning against  . . chanda found it amusing that he was in the chair and i on the floor . . 

in the afternoon (after i had mowed the front lawn), chanda and i had a long walk along the beach at ditch plains.

standing on the ruins of a house that had fallen from the cliff due to erosion . . 

a black skimmer flew by . . 

it was very misty and the tide was coming in . . 

this dog was watching the one surfer who was out at sea very intently. we thought he might have been waiting for him.
