evening walk on the high line

the mahogany tree

by

william makepeace thackeray (1811 - 1863)

christmas is here;
winds whistle shrill,
icy and chill,
little care we;
little we fear
weather without,
shelter'd about
the mahogany tree.

once on the boughs
birds of rare plume
sang, in its bloom;
night birds are we;
here we carouse,
singing, like them,
perch'd round the stem
of the jolly old tree.

here let us sport,
boys, as we sit–
laughter and wit
flashing so free.
life is but short–
when we are gone,
let them sing on,
round the old tree.

evenings we knew,
happy as this;
faces we miss,
pleasant to see.
kind hearts and true,
gentle and just,
peace to your dust!
we sing round the tree.

care, like a dun,
lurks at the gate:
let the dog wait;
happy we'll be!
drink every one;
pile up the coals,
fill the red bowls,
round the old tree.

drain we the cup.–
friend, art afraid?
spirits are laid
in the red sea.
mantle it up;
empty it yet;
let us forget,
round the old tree.

sorrows, begone!
life and its ills,
duns and their bills,
bid we to flee.
come with the dawn,
blue-devil sprite,
leave us to-night,
round the old tree.

visiting korrina

greg and i took the train to see korrina in her new apartment today.

it's such a nice space and she has it fixed up very cozy.

i was supposed to bring the drill so she could hang some hooks, but unfortunately i forgot.

 on a clear day you can see the manhattan skyline.

 they'll be able to put a table in the kitchen . . i love that they have a window. that's the one thing i wish we had here . . !

 we took a walk to her favorite coffee shop around the corner.

it's such a pretty neighborhood and she's so happy to be staying in the vicinity of her favorite stores.

 we passed the flatbush food coop where she likes to shop, the brooklyn public library, the farm to table restaurant on adderley, a wine store and bar she likes . . and mimi's hummus where we had lunch.

korrina had an iraqi pita pocket with eggplant, cabbage, potato, egg and amba (a tangy mango pickle condiment).

i had the lunch special which included hummus, roasted cauliflower salad (garlic, lemon and tahini) and shawarma (chicken, sheep's yogurt, onion, cucumber, amba and rice).

 we took the train back into manhattan together as she had work.

 the window at this subway stop is part of an installation by patsy norvell called garden stops. you can see images of the other windows included in the exhibit here.

 at home we played cards and had hot chocolate and panettone with chanda.

quiet wednesday morning or fourth day

greg is off this week but went out for a walk. morgana was studying but relieved chanda at a babysitting gig as she had to run off to rehearse with her ballet teacher, so i'm here with the cats updating the blog. i'm feeling sad that carrie fisher has died. she was such an honest, humorous, witty and irreverent soul that i will greatly miss her comments on life and her warm heart. she also played one of the most iconic female characters of the twentieth and twenty first centuries: princess leia or general leia organa. the character, and the actress, is such a strong role model for many young women of today. i truly believe that the actress' life is just as heroic as the character's. she lived honestly and passionately and cared about the people she touched in her life. i appreciated anne théreault's eulogy of her feelings and thoughts on carrie's passing in relation to the character she played. i wish she was still with us.

tuesday morning, or third day

 today began where yesterday left off: eating krumkake!

wikipedia says that "krumkake" means "bent cake." "krum" relates to the curve of the dough when you shape it.

 sharing is very special and very important!

 my sister and i and morgana and chanda went out for a walk. my mom didn't want to go back to her assisted living apartment and so was being very slow about getting ready. we left her with the guys while we went around the block. it's amusing for me to see my sister trying to get along with my mom as for years (as in all my life!) she teased me about having trouble getting along with my dad: "the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree" she always said. now i see the same dynamic between her and my mom.

 waiting for me . .

 getting impatient and going on ahead!

 beautiful winter sky . .

 we're all so grown up!

 heading home . . with a stop at the middletown health food store.

at home: morgana, chanda and i were so stuffed after our connecticut christmas celebration, but greg couldn't wait to dig into our christmas leftovers!

 he did such a nice job of preparing everything . .

 and chanda set the table . .

and since i didn't get a photo of our dinner on sunday night, here it is: tuscan white beans and florentine meatloaf with gyetöst cheese and roasted peppers for an appetizer.

christmas in connecticut

 all is bare and brown now . . grey with hints of light blue and lavender and patches of green.

winter sky . .

 family pictures . .

 family celebration . .

 antipasta . .

 sparkling cider and . .

 ravioli.

 christmas decorations . .

 looking for chocolate on the tree . .

 singing the norwegian christmas song . . we all join hands and circle the cloth tree while singing. i suppose in norway they would circle the real tree, but here in the states the real trees are usually placed against the wall, making it difficult to completely circle it. my sister has been carting this cloth tree to all her husband's norwegian christmas celebrations where they dance and sing around it every year. this year we sang and danced with korrina's brian, as he is also part norwegian on his mother's side.

 playing wits and wagers . .

the question was: in what year did benjamin franklin prove lightning was electricity?

 dessert time!

norwegian krumkake and julekake, gingerbread, biscotti, french chocolates, peppermint bark and butter cookies.

 toby posed for me . .

in the evening adam had to leave to return to cape cod for work the next morning, as did korrina and brian (brian had to be in at 8 am and korrina at 2:30 pm). greg took the latter two to the bus station.
