this is the sweetest movie that dance theatre of harlem created as a special tribute to their founder, arthur mitchell, whose legacy they celebrated last saturday, as it has been two years since he died. you can see the full thirty minute movie here.
by day the blue will pale down into white where it touches the white of the land, after sunset it has a new circumference-orange, melting upwards into tenderest purple. but the core of blue persists, and so it is by night. then the stars hang like lamps from the immense vault. the distance between the vault and them is as nothing to the distance behind them, and that farther distance, though beyond colour, last freed itself from blue. -e.m. forster (a passage to india)

wednesday breakfast
chanda and i took our time with breakfast this morning, as she didn't run off to classes as she usually does. last monday she hurt her foot coming down the stairs at the dance studio uptown where she takes morning class before her private lesson. for a week now, she's been limping around and hasn't been able to point her foot. yesterday she went to see a physical therapist recommended by her private teacher, who confirmed that she has a sprain. the therapist gave her several exercises to do and suggested she refrain from dancing for another week, or at least until she can point the foot without any pain. it's very frustrating as she's rehearsing for a nutcracker and for her modern dance teacher's show in january (which she's also choreographing for). all her teachers are annoyed with her . . it's too funny! i even feel annoyed with her! and i think she does too. she was walking down the stairs looking at her cell phone and then slipped because it's an old building and the stairs are very steep. we're all much too cavalier with the cell phones.
anyway, we watched two dance documentaries today: wendy whalen's restless creature, and merrill ashley's the dance goodbye:
