a poem for sunday, brunch in queens and a lunar eclipse

 nocturne

upon the silent sea-swept land
the dreams of night fall soft and gray,
the waves fade on the jeweled sand
like some lost hope of yesterday.

the dreams of night fall soft and gray
upon the summer-colored seas,
like some lost hope of yesterday,
the sea-mew's song is on the breeze.

upon the summer-colored seas
sails gleam and glimmer ghostly white,
the sea-mew's song is on the breeze
lost in the monotone of night.

sails glean and glimmer ghostly white,
they come and slowly drift away,
lost in the monotone of night,
         like visions of a summer-day.

they shift and slowly drift away
like lovers' lays that wax and wane,
        the visions of a summer-day
whose dreams was ne'er will dream again.

like lovers' lays wax and wane
the star dawn shifts from sail to sail,
                           like dreams we ne'er will dream again;
the sea-mews follow on their trail.

the star dawn shifts from sail to sail,
as they drift to the dim unknown,
the sea-mews follow on their trail
in quest of some dreamland zone.

in quest of some far dreamland zone,
of some far silent sea-swept land,
they are lost in the dim unknown,
where waves fade on jeweled sand
and dreams of night fall soft and gray,
like some lost hope of yesterday.

we had breakfast with korrina this morning, as we drove to queens to bring her the new suitcase. here we're having our coffee outside at a favorite diner in the neighborhood where greg has been wanting to go after hearing so much about it.

there's always so many choices at nyc diners . .

i had huevos rancheros and korrina had huevos a la mexicano with chorizo . .

and greg had a mushroom omelette with home fries, which i thought looked very sad next to our heaping plates of huevos.

walking back to the car . .

we passed a new type of tree in one of the sidewalk pits . .

the tree map identifies it as a dawn redwood, metasequoia glyptostroboides, a beautiful deciduous conifer.

after talking about our latest knitting projects, we said good-bye and then headed back home along the BQE . . where we're now watching the lunar eclipse.

i was excited when i looked out the window at 11:30 pm to see that the color had changed to a rust red. this month's full moon has many names: the flower moon, budding moon, milk moon, grass moon, planting moon . . you can read more about it here.

lunar eclipse

it was such a fun evening. the lunar eclipse happened at just the right time for hanging out on the street corner with neighbors and passersby.

and we had the funniest time teasing a neighbor who lost some money but luckily it was found!

the gang's all here . . ! (unfortunately, the clouds came by for the total eclipse during which there was the beautiful burnt red/orange glow around the moon, but we did get to see the first phase).
