we've been visiting my parents, and celebrated christmas with my sister and her family on friday before they left to visit my brother-in-law's family.  korrina came out saturday and returned home today. tomorrow it's greg's turn. we'll stay for new year's eve and return new year's day.

unfortunately, morgana and chanda have been sick and have been quarantined to the downstairs. chanda has had a fever and is slowly recovering. morgana is not doing as well. she has a painful and itchy rash which may be staph . . not good. she's been on medication but is not responding well. tomorrow morning i'll meet greg at the emergency room in south-ampton. not the best to be here when all are so sick. . too many germs floating around . . even jack is restless and doing poorly . . his kidneys are failing . . it's only a matter of time for him . .

we left manhattan around 9 am to come out to montauk again. we wanted to attend purl by the sea's re-opening party.

there's also a parade tomorrow in town, and yard work that needs to be done. we'll be busy.

at kirk beach

today was the warmest day . . sunny, not a cloud in the sky.

we read about horseshoe crabs in delaware bay and how they lay millions of eggs that are eaten by shore birds stopping over for about two weeks during their annual spring migration to the arctic from south america. millions and millions of eggs are eaten, but there are still plenty left for tiny horseshoe crab larva to hatch from. they are then washed out to the bay where they grow and shed their skins several times before reaching maturity at around eight or ten years old. they then make their way to the beach and it is their turn to either lay or fertilize millions and millions of eggs for the shore birds . .

we sketched and wrote a little in our nature books, and chanda had a fun time adding her feet!

afternoon at kirk beach

we spent the afternoon at kirk beach and a very large seagull stole my bag of ginger snaps! there was still a lot left in the bag and he opened his beak up wide and carried the whole thing off. i was rather amazed. i've seen them eat scraps from plates, and snippets from chip and pretzel bags, but i've never seen them carry off a bag of cookies!

at least it didn't get our lunch, (sigh) just my dessert.

i also worked on my ishbel. it's coming along nicely, but i think i may run out of yarn at the tip . . so i ordered a skein of knitpicks' shimmer in purple just in case! (i had to also put an order in for a 47 inch cable for the veronik avery mountain shawl i hope to start soon).

i drove out to montauk today, with k and her friend james, and chanda. we met my sister out there and rolled in the waves at kirk beach. it feels so wonderful to be by the sea . . . .
