saturday and sunday (a poem too)

summer

and it grows, the vain
summer,
even for us with our
bright green sins:

behold the dry guest,
the wind,
as it stirs up quarrels
among magnolia boughs

and plays its serene
tune on
the prows of all the leaves--
and then is gone,

leaving the leaves
still there,
the tree still green, but breaking
the heart of the air.

spring weekend work

we went to check on the house this weekend . . it's definitely lawn mowing season again. everything is turning green and the beach project has been completed (dredging offshore brought sand inland to fill out the shoreline), so the beaches are ready for summer. our favorite restaurant reopened and the pizza place finished their renovation. we had one neighbor over for tea, and watched our other neighbor work all day to fix the shingles on his roof which had blown off in the last storm (after just having the entire roof redone in the fall - i guess we can't count on him for a roof repair recommendation). we were able to take apart the one window that needs repair and order a new part for it. now we just need to have the kitchen window replaced . . cricket and zuzu had a grand time playing and running around . .

(inside the house)

a delicious dinner of shrimp and clams with the bellies . . what is greg looking at?

the gulls who often try to steal one's food . .

cats will do the same . .

the crank and operator arm that we successfully detached so we could order a new part . .

cleaning up afterwards . .

i'm enjoying reading black beauty by anna sewall again. kathy gave me a beautiful edition for christmas.

the peepers are still out at night . .

(a photo from korrirna who bought beautiful lilacs saturday on her way to work . . )

(and a photo from morgan who celebrated a friend's birthday with his family on a sunny day somewhere outside of londontown . . )

sunday breakfast for greg and i . .

and a visit to hotel beach . .

and ditch . .

and a rainy drive home . .

the sea on saturday and the sea on sunday

it was a very foggy saturday, with a storm out at sea roiling up the surf.

i was entranced watching the seagull hover on the wind and i was struck by the thought that he must have really been enjoying himself. he was surfing the storm breezes.

beautiful goldenrod . .

and daisies.

----
sunday . .

there was a special event in town this weekend so it was filled with visitors, creating long lines for brunch at the two main diners on sunday morning. i wanted to attend the pancake breakfast at the firehouse as we did with morgan last october, but greg didn't feel like it, so we went to joni's where the overflow of visitors hadn't yet descended.

cricket became obsessed with trying to tear apart the covering for the boxspring in the main bedroom, so we had to keep the door closed for the entire visit. this was very annoying. he and zuzu already tore apart the same type of covering on the old chair inherited from my sister and brother-in-law here at home. it's funny how this material entices them to claw at it incessantly.

pluto waiting to be fed.

we started for home around 2 pm and stopped at hampton chutney for curried chicken salad, naan bread, a strawberry lassi and brownies. thankfully, we arrived home before victoria got in from finland. she'll be emptying her storage unit during this trip, and filming in the loft of a friend who recently passed away.

hello from aurélien . .

and his jack o'lantern.

(we also mowed the lawn, hoping it's the last time until spring, and drained the outdoor water lines for the winter.)
