handspun, granny squares, red hook and queens

when i came home from connecticut a month ago, this lovely skein of handspun welcomed me. i purchased it on a whim on a very hot day. it looked so cool and refreshing in the midst of the 104 degree heat. robyn love has an etsy site called wee ball yarns where she sells her beautiful handspun. when i bought this from her, i said i was sure it would send the heat wave away. and it did. thanks for the beautiful yarn, robyn. i never did get to tell you that all was properly received and i love the skein.

i'm mentioning the handspun today, as morgana, chanda and i finally finished our granny squares for robyn's latest art project, avenue of trees, and we decided that it would be a good day to take them to her in queens.

before going to queens, we (chanda, greg and i - morgana stayed home to rest as she wasn't feeling well) decided to go to ikea to pick up a shelving unit for korrina, so she can put away all the items that are currently laying about the floor of her room (hmmm). we missed the first turn off and ended up driving underneath the gowanus expressway which never fails to fascinate me. it rises up so large on such spindly looking legs with thousands of cars and trucks speeding along on top of it, to say nothing of the tons of concrete and steel that make up the road. i'm amazed it all stays intact . .

ikea in red hook . . it was built on a dry dock that was supposedly still in use. residents of the neighborhood weren't overjoyed about the thought of so many consumers traipsing into their neighborhood.

red hook was settled by dutch colonists of new amsterdam in 1636. roode hoek was named for the red soil and the point of land that jutted into the east river. through the years it has been home to factories, warehouses, residential houses and apartments, and the red hook marine terminal, the only facility in brooklyn to handle container ships. i thought the building behind the ikea sign looked . . . interesting! i'm not sure what it was used for . .

i did enjoy walking along the dock, looking out at the factories and warehouses that are no longer in use . .

. . looking at the sculptures that mirror the industrial and dry dock relics left behind . .

the water taxi makes excursions from pier 11 in manhattan.

it being labor day weekend, many shoppers were out and about. i was surprised at the line of people waiting to board. i think the taxi ride is free on weekends . .

greg leading the way and trying to keep us going on a "surgical strike . . "

finally . . searching for the box . .

i love the grasses . .

here are the squares, with janet's two on top . . waiting for the next stop in queens. (ha! we did manage to get an item in addition to the shelving unit . . hangers. never enough of those in this house).

on the BQE to queens . .

(nyc always gives good things to blog about, one of them being the bqe).

in queens . . wonderfully verdant and rundown (compared to manicured manhattan) . .

chanda and i loved how overgrown the trees and bushes were. we loved the red brick houses . . we loved the skyscrapers of manhattan rising up in a haze at the end of robyn's road . .

a stack of granny squares . . just one stack of . . hundreds . . thousands!? our squares are the top seven . . probably (and hopefully) no longer . . maybe the pile has now reached to the ceiling. it was so late in the afternoon, that robyn was home from her morning and early afternoon errands and we got to say hello and wish her much luck and fun in korea.

we took the mid-town tunnel home . . because it has such a beautiful view . . and because the traffic on the bqe heading south was horrendous.

special thanks for today's outing go to my taxi man and our taxi . .

back at home we were all starving. thankfully, we had bought several delicious items at the coop the day before. bay scallops made their way into the frying pan, and basil into the food processor for pesto.

this parting picture is of hermione, entranced with the bubbles in morgana's bath . .

korrina's handspun and live-ed talk

korrina has been busy spinning . .
. . and plying . .
i believe this ply that she did is a mixture of nistock farm's "blue jean" wool roving and lunabudknits' handpainted superwash "blue-teal suicide." i dropped chanda and morgana off at their dance class and then went to a talk with live-education's rainbow rosenbloom. my friend cindi went with me, and our friend marisa met us there. i found rainbow's ideas for homeschooling very inspiring, and i'm looking forward to working with the curriculum. we're going to mix the fifth grade with some eighth grade subjects for morgana. i also hope korrina sits down with us for a little bit of geometry and chemistry. marisa and i are thinking that we might get korrina and her daughter together for physics . . just some ideas we're tossing about . . the difficult part will be finding the time to get together and implement them! of course . . where's there's a will . . there's a way . .
