my friend and i walked through the pouring rain to see an off-broadway matinee show this afternoon. i was so excited when she called me to say that she had an extra ticket from a friend. the play was sam shepard's buried child, (with ed harris and amy madigan) which i've never seen (it's the one piece from his later plays written in the late '70's to early '80's that i hadn't seen). i wrote my master's thesis on his early plays when at college, so it was a real treat. in 2014 he had a new play produced at the same theatre we were at today. click here for an article with him on the present production.
by day the blue will pale down into white where it touches the white of the land, after sunset it has a new circumference-orange, melting upwards into tenderest purple. but the core of blue persists, and so it is by night. then the stars hang like lamps from the immense vault. the distance between the vault and them is as nothing to the distance behind them, and that farther distance, though beyond colour, last freed itself from blue. -e.m. forster (a passage to india)
