my friend ron sent me these photos on june first, when he went for a bike ride uptown to the little red lighthouse.
these are such wonderful photos. the lighthouse is sweet, and it's nice that it's kept up so well. it was constructed in 1889 in sandy hook, new jersey, and was moved to it's current location in 1921. construction on the george washington bridge began in 1927 and was finished in 1931. in 1948, the coast guard decommissioned it and put out its light (the navigational lights of the bridge made it obsolete), and it might have been dismantled if it hadn't been for its popularity due to the 1942 book by hildegard swift, the little red lighthouse and the great grey bridge. instead, the little lighthouse was deeded to the new york city department of parks and recreation and was made a landmark in 1991. finally, in 2002 its light was relit. isn't that a lovely story?
