afterwards, we had tomato soup and a salad at maman cafe on washington street . .
by day the blue will pale down into white where it touches the white of the land, after sunset it has a new circumference-orange, melting upwards into tenderest purple. but the core of blue persists, and so it is by night. then the stars hang like lamps from the immense vault. the distance between the vault and them is as nothing to the distance behind them, and that farther distance, though beyond colour, last freed itself from blue. -e.m. forster (a passage to india)

friday catch up
we've had some beautiful sunny days lately, but today is once again grey. however . . spring is here! yesterday it was 68 degrees and today i think it's supposed to go up to 62.
i finally visited the edward hopper exhibit at the whitney museum on wednesday (it closes march 5th), and on tuesday, valentine's day, i finally made it to the she who wrote-enheduanna and the women of mesopotamia exhibit at the morgan library on my way home from a dental appointment. i have a few photos of the hopper show (i plan to return before march 5th!) and many photos of the she who wrote . . so i hope to post those in the next few days. kendall and i also visited our friend janine in connecticut with aurélien last saturday to sunday. we spent a lot of time outside walking around her community lake and sitting outside around a warm fire.
morgan has been working in beautiful wyoming, babysitting for a family's twins and helping with their ailing dog. i think they all come back this weekend. below is a photo and short video of a brief break on the mountain, finally getting a ski run in:
right now i hear a white throated sparrow singing diligently in the courtyard. this is the first winter that i've heard one consistently all season long. usually their song announces spring for me, so . . this winter has been one long spring with no snow and only a few cold days sprinkled about.

sick days
i have a terrible cold. i could feel it coming on yesterday.
my sister sent me a biography of leslie caron and i've been enjoying it immensely (i didn't realize it was from her until she sent me a note asking if i
had received it - i thought i had forgotten about ordering it from
alibris). she shares wonderful stories about her relatives and theatre colleagues. i thought it was interesting that she bought an old building south of paris in the burgundy region, along the river yonne and made it into a restaurant and hotel (auberge la lucarnes aux chouettes).
korrina has been knitting beautiful things:

cafe breakfast
it was cold again this morning and i joined morgan at merriweather for a cappuccino and pain au chocolate. (there haven't been many vendors at the market these saturdays . . when it's so cold they stay home as the produce and dairy products will freeze).
chanda took a break and sat with us for a little bit.

dinner at sevilla
we celebrated janet's birthday this evening. it was a very cold night (15 degrees fahrenheit) and i didn't expect sevilla to be busy, but it was! all the tables were filled and everyone was having a grand time. we shared a delicious grilled octopus appetizer, paella a la marinera (scallops, clams, mussels and lobster with rice) and flan.
