i started the day with fresh strawberries and yogurt. chanda and i were supposed to meet our friends elsa and francesca at co-pizza on ninth avenue at 12:45, but i forgot that chanda was filling in for morgana (since she was at her limon dance intensive) in the hb playwright's office. so . . . the lunch date was cancelled . . much to my disappointment. i ended up ironing, and folding laundry and straightening up and running an errand to the hardware store while she was at the office. not exactly what i wanted to do on my birthday, but it was alright . . i suppose. as an alternative i was hoping to get into a mozzarella making class at eataly at 6:30, but there weren't any cancellations. c'est la vie.
chanda worked on her roman history before running off to hb . .
and linney latin . .
after listening to the lesson, she writes it out in her lesson book.
hermione likes to perch on the bookcase next to the table . . she is always up there keeping an eye on things . .
this is my bakerite teacup that i found in a thrift store on the cape last summer. the woman sold me four bowls, one pie plate, and one teacup and saucer for $2! the trim is 22k gold . . !!
a hydrangea bush we always pass on washington street on our way to the high line. i love the dusty rose color . . when chanda returned from office work, i figured we both better get out for a walk before it rained . . which it is always threatening to do these days. i first thought we should go for a bike ride (which i actually haven't done all year . . even in the fall), but the sun came out and it felt too hot. so we went on a walk along the high line instead.
stachys officinalis, "hummelo"
interesting building . . not sure yet what it is . .
echinacea purpurea "virgin" (are these common names from posterity . . or names thought up by hybrid garden experts?)
i hadn't had lunch, and even though chanda did have lunch, she can always fit in a little more, so we shared an order of tacos and chips and guacamole from the taco truck. they were very spicy and covered in delicious lime juice. it's a good thing morgana wasn't with us . . she's very allergic to citrus and spicy foods these days.
while eating we were serenaded by a shamisen musician.
chanda is regaling me with her office stories of the day . . she had several calls for reservations for the current play, and she also folded 100 programs.
i took this picture because of what the sign says in front of the young girl in the redish/pinkish shirt on the chair. it says "face reading." would you like to have your face read? i would like to try it just to see what she says!! (you eat too much chocolate and worry too much . . ).
the view north up tenth avenue from where we were sitting at around 16th street.
the view south . . off in the haze is the statue of liberty . .
high line billboard art . . this piece is by raymond pettibon (b. 1957, arizona), and depicts the drama of a baseball game between the boston red sox and the brooklyn dodgers, recalling the excitement of having jackie robinson play in the major leagues. supposedly "moses out" refers to robert moses, and the biblical moses, and "where brooklyn at" recalls the rap battle between east coast rapper notorious b.i.g. and west coast rapper tupac shakur.
dinner this evening consisted of homemade eataly ravioli "cacio e pepe" (with just melted butter and fresh pepper for a sauce) and a romaine salad with feta, toasted walnuts and grapes.
playing "set" afterwards . .
