a change in the weather

eva said she felt a hint of autumn beginning to arrive in her neck of the woods . . early friday morning brought a change to our area, also. the breeze turned very cool and the dewpoint dropped to 61, and humidity to 57%. it's still very low today and we're all enjoying it, while trying not to think about when it gets hot again!

we were supposed to all get together for a round of scattergories online, but i mixed the days and times up, so some of us couldn't attend (greg and morgana). korrina, chanda and i played several rounds and caught up on each others' news, and tomorrow, greg and i will catch up with morgana.

this is the cable swatch i made with the online knitting class last night.

i've also been enjoying these history lessons from the new york historical society. (see other lectures under their public programs.)

the big news for new yorkers today is that museums can reopen at 25% capacity next monday, the 24th.  bowling alleys were included in this announcement, also. in fact, bowling alleys can operate at 50% capacity! and i just read that gyms can open at 33% . . i wonder how they decide on these numbers!

workshop day at VKL

my workshop began at 9 am and i was out the door at 8:15, which is later than i wanted to be as i had considered walking there. instead i took the train. when i arrived at my destination, both starbucks coffee shops in the vicinity had long lines. where should i go for tea? across the street was junior's diner and their little to go bakery had only one customer. that was fortunate. there's not much difference between twinings earl grey tea and teavana's.

the class i attended was knitting haps (shawls) with gudrun johnston. to help us understand the concepts needed, she had us knitting a mini version.

she also presented a slideshow about the shetland islands, where she grew up, sharing how the residents exported knitted garments to the mainland and overseas, and how the sheep were managed by the residents, but roamed wild all year round. they are a small sheep, and very hardy, being able to live off a rough landscape.

joining my sqaure into the round . .

at lunch i attended the diversity meeting which was very inspiring.

we took a photo of everyone wearing their our common threads cowl. i was impressed with everyone's choice of colors. they were all beautiful.

back at class . . i enjoyed adding the colors i had picked from my stash, but i knew i wouldn't be able to get up to the lace edging before the class ended. not many people did . .

except for the fellow workshop attendee sitting next to me, who was nice enough to allow me to film her getting advice from gudrun about knitting the lace edging. at this point i was considering that if i made a full shawl, perhaps i wouldn't add the edging at all . . following the custom of the shetland residents who only added the lace edging on the shawls that would be sold. they didn't have time to add the lace onto their own shawls, and maybe they didn't consider it practical. i enjoyed seeing the photos of them with their lace free work shawls draped criss-cross over their chests.

a few of the beautiful shawls gudrun brought with her.

it was a wonderful workshop and i hope i don't procrastinate too long with finishing my sample.

----

on the way home i checked my phone to see if eva's charlotte had arrived in penn station yet. she's attending a ballet workshop tomorrow, sunday and monday. greg texted me that she had just walked in (about 6:45 pm) and i made it home to have dinner with them.

knitting for a news show

we visited the lionbrand store today . .

patty at lionbrand yarns asked morgana if she knew several teenagers who could meet to shoot an interview with teen kids news. (patty thought to ask morgana from the meet me at the corner episode that was shot at lionbrand two years ago).

korrina, deychen, amelia and chanda came along.

amelia is in korrina's wednesday knitting class and is working on a beautiful pair of red spiral leg warmers. morgana is working on a DROPS design sweater with yarn her friend yves gave her from the dutchess county sheep and wool festival. i'm not sure what deychen is working on! chanda picked up a skein of lionbrand cotton and began knitting a napkin.

korrina is finishing up a winter headband in lionbrand cashmere for her dance teacher.

deychen talked about how knitting can be good therapy.

korrina volunteered to teach the young interviewer how to knit. she also answered a few questions about when she learned to knit, and why she likes to knit.

korrina's knitting class

korrina has been holding a knitting class on wednesday mornings. her students are lovely and she has them working on small pocket bags for their first project. we have a bin of stash yarn that they got to choose from, and beautiful buttons to pick out for the finished piece. we also made knitting needles for several of them.

this bag was made by amelia. i love the button!

more snow

i didn't expect snow this morning. i expected rain, which was predicted by the weather people on the radio. so i thought.

morgana and chanda read and worked on puzzles . .

while korrina held her first knitting class.

i helped her make knitting needles for the students.

we take a long dowl and cut it down to about ten to twelve inches in length. then shave it into a point with a pencil sharpener, and sand it. and sand it. and sand it! last night i made some more beeswax finish and after sanding, i slathered it on. then i buffed it. i love buffing it. it gets to be so smooth. then we glue the beads to the end. i'm looking forward to making a few more. there were some students missing today because of the weather. they'll be here next week, and i think we need another set of needles. morgana would like another set also. someone stepped on her's!

m and c and i finally got in a craft hour. we listened to the voyage of the dawn treader.

chanda's boucle scarf.

morgana began an end of year gift for her acting teacher: a spring scarf with sock yarn and knitpicks crayon yarn.

and this secret knitting project continues . .

this is korrina's friend tyler. she made him the wurm hat in patons bamboo silk and lionbrand superwash merino. i'm glad it's done as now she can start mine! she'll make it with lionbrand superwash in mahogany.

i just stepped outside for a moment. it's really coming down!

it's another blustery snowstorm. it's supposed to snow all night.
