here . . and there

this morning it was my turn to sit out in my car and wait for the street cleaner . . who didn't come today either! i saw him pass by on other streets, but he decided to not bother with the cobble stoned street i was parked on. that was fine by me. i worked on my sock knitting and listened to knitting podcasts and watched the rain come down.

----

out on montauk my sister's family has been working hard . . here my brother-in-law is treating the deck . .

with help from my nephews . .

painting all the walls "navajo white" from benjamin moore.

 love the shades!

changing the broken lock on the slider door . .

and the broken lock on the front door . .

my sister cleaned the mildew from the window glider tracks . .

and my nephew sorted through all my dad's "stuff" in the downstairs closet. i wish i had a before pic!

and the book i read today, which i recommend. i read it along with black coffee with white friends, a book discussion group which is hosted on the good reads website. marcie, the leader of the book discussion, has a blog which can be found here, which is filled with book recommendations (found here), shared experiences, history, personal stories, and important conversations (particularly the one here). it's a good introduction to learning about the experience of black americans. it's important to know . . to listen, to learn, and marcie's voice is honest and accepting. this is the link for the book club.

dinner tonight was bratwurst from the butcher with zucchini and potatoes sautéed in butter, and fresh cucumber and radish.

it's slowly getting dark earlier, and i've begun occasionally lighting a candle again.

more commuting, last dance class with sander, and emily's rainbow pic

korrina's early morning spinning during her commute . .

and the 59th street bridge.

----

it was the last day of sander blommaert's lockdown dance classes. he celebrated by having marianela nunez on his instagram story. everyone was very excited, including sander.

we've all been so appreciative of him taking this time with us, and will really miss his daily classes.

i had been doing laundry, and so when it was time for the "party," i walked to west 11th street cafe to listen . .

and was caught in a rainstorm!

----

we've been having a lot of these wonderful thunderstorms lately, with spectacular rainbows afterwards. chanda and emily were caught out in this one also, and emily snapped this pic. they were at the beginning of the rainbow . . or the end?

the garbage can at the end of the rainbow . . ireland has pots of gold, nyc has garbage cans.

taco tuesday, a new commute and phase one begins

greg loves taco tuesday . .

korrina has a new commute . . she's going into work to help break up the kitchen as they won't be reopening, and she is also volunteering at a food distribution charity downtown . . she helps cook the meals that are delivered to different housing developments, i think. she takes her bicycle to the ferry . . it's so rejuvenating to be out on the river.

new york city officially began phase one of reopening yesterday. all construction is now allowed to continue (and i hear it across the courtyard as work has begun once again on a ground floor apartment); hunting and fishing in parks is again allowed; manufacturing and wholesale trade begins again (with proper physical distancing and mask wearing), and retail is permitted for curbside pickup or in-store pick up or drop off with proper mask wearing. many restaurants in our neighborhood have reopened for take out, with chairs arranged outside for customers to sit and wait for their food (of course they have drinks during this waiting period! i love how loosey goosey everything is, but i do appreciate how everyone is conscientious about wearing masks . . yes, the masks are pulled down to talk, but people keep their distance).

a ferry ride and a dance concert

i thought it would be fun to take the nyc ferry to astoria today, to see our friend amelia dance at the socrates sculpture park.

i also thought that it would feel so wonderful to be out on the river with the wind in our faces . .

passing the building korrina works in. her restaurant overlooks the highway and the river.

pointing to where her friend lives on roosevelt island . .

 our destination . .

chanda was asked to participate in a dance . .

our friend amelia . .

down the hillside to the revels . .

we were surprised to see that our friend kathyn alter was also dancing with her company today . .

our friend now has a son who is 3 1/2. we know her from when morgana danced with the jose limon company in 2008. you can see two posts from that time here and here.

(this is an excerpt of the dance, day on earth: morgana comes in at 1:17 and is dancing with roxanne d'orleans juste and rafael boumailla.)

there is a mailbox on top of the sign post with stairs going up to it. you may have to click to enlarge the photo in order to see it. the car to the left was also interesting . . it had some kind of white netting creating a pattern over the exterior.

putting away the portable chair . .

before having dinner at belaire diner . .

it was a fun day . . we ended up walking eight blocks to the subway and taking the f train home. it was not as pretty of a ride, but it was much quicker.
