shiny happy people

milly . . after eating one of the treats i keep in my pocket .. . it's so wonderful walking around the city now. everyone is so happy (due to the knicks winning the championship - i shared when they won on june 14th's post: at the beach). i've read accounts where reporters feel that the city hasn't been this lighthearted since before 9/11. i won't dispute that. there really is a special joy in the air.

greg and i had dinner at las mariscos (greg's favorite place) . .

i continued my reading of the scarlet pimpernel while waiting for our food . .

now that the basketball championship is over, the focus is on the world cup. i think argentina and brazil were playing here?

walking home . . it was a beautiful evening. i love summer's long days.

walking milly and taco tuesday

my last class at the library is wedensday so i walked milly today . . i love when her ears blow in the wind.

my second week enjoying fellini's outdoor ordering window . .  (they always warm the croissant!)

i had treats in my pocket for her.

the days have been so beautiful - sunny, breezy and cool.

i couldn't resist taking a photo of her on her fluffy bed . . ! she has a little human sister that takes all her mom's attention . . povera milly!

this evening it was taco tuesday for us . .

morgan sent another photo with the cute little one from easter . .

and korrina wrote this evening when she got home from work and sent a photo of wash.

one more day together before traveling

it's a beautiful wednesday and also very cold and windy.

i take our compost now to a container at charles street in the park, as the park has a facility for processing vegetarian food scraps.

i stopped at st. luke's garden on my way to the health food store and to brooklyn fare for taco ingredients for dinner tonight.

it was lunchtime for the squirrels . .

walking back home past hungry llama cafe . .

making a carrot snack for the plane . .

a silly cat game: morgana had seen this on an instagram post and i've been saving kombucha bottle caps since the springtime in preparation for trying it ourselves . . yes! very silly!

the last of the holiday cookies . .

and a fun game of may i . . (greg went to sleep as he'll be getting up early to drive them to the airport) . .

would the cats like to go along?

and time to get some sleep now . .

taco tuesday

today was the first day to help ellen (sacha's charlotte was there also, to help demonstrate, but she broke her foot when hiking and still has a boot on for the next two weeks!) and i met greg for tacos at tacombi afterwards . . we had never been here before.

delicious guacamole, but i didn't like the tacos as much as las mariscos . . we brought some home for chanda (she had been in class).

the weather has been so beautiful . . in the low 80's and not at all humid. i love when the air conditioning isn't necessary and all the shops have their doors open.

walking home . .

at the library

i met my knitting friend, evie, at the main branch of the library this afternoon.

we met at the cafe/gift shop to catch up on things, and to swap some yarn. i gave her a few skeins of light blue/grey bulky yarn and received two skeins of turquoise bulky yarn (knit collage). she's flying to london in a week to visit a friend, and then on to lisbon for her archival work.

after saying goodbye, i decided to view the library's current exhibit titled . .

"the awe of the arctic - a visual history." they highlighted several exhibitions to the arctic accompanied by beautiful photographs, lithographs, woodcuts and engravings.

i was intrigued with the section about women in the arctic . .

photos by jette bang, danish, 1914-1964 (children in greenland)

"greenland", one of several books she authored that included her photos.

hand-drawn map, 1908, by agnes deans cameron, canadian, 1863-1912.
in the winter of 1908, journalist agnes deans cameron planned a journey from edmonton, alberta to the arctic ocean. however, she needed a magazine to commit to publishing her account, so she sent a "pitch" package to the editor of the century illustrated monthly magazine highlighting her credentials and explaining the significance of her expedition. the map above was included.

agnes dean cameron's travelogue of her adventures in the arctic, the new north.

the book pictured above i would like to read, eine fraue erlebt die polarnacht, (a woman experiences the polar night). it's by austrian writer, christiane ritter (1897-2000) (she lived to be 103!) who traveled with her husband to a remote, uninhabited part of svalbard, norway in 1933. her writing encompasses her time alone in the their hut while he was off hunting. she shares her fears that changed into a deep appreciation for the beauty of the landscape and a strength that came from being alone for such an extended period of time in nature.

bryant park

the sign says "lawn closed - the new sod is establishing its roots."

m and j trimming!

i bought colorful buttons . .

and large snaps.

meeting greg at las mariscos for fish and shrimp tacos . .

and guacamole and chips.

it was a good long walk and i should sleep well tonight!
