sunday walks

early morning walk with greg . .

explaining the tidal zone . .

a mourning dove!

breakfast with chanda . .

delicious strawberries from the coop which were gone by the end of the day.

morgan and harley's new floor which they just laid down. it looks nice!

more organizing! i like the fish on the top.

----

after breakfast, greg and i walked downtown to see the new little syria exhibit.

it's in the elizabeth h. berger plaza at the meeting of three streets: trinity place, greenwich street and edgar street. the area was once called the syrian quarter beginning from the late 1880's as many people from the ottoman mount lebanon/syria area came to live here. it was new york's first community of arabic speaking immigrants.

the sculpture has the names of many lebanese/syrian writers. i actually couldn't find a plaque with an explanation. i'm hoping they put one up soon as i'd like to know what the arabic means and who the writers are.

it's a lovely exhibit and park.

walking back home . .

past where greg used to work when at time warner. it seems that people magazine still occupies part of the lobby area they were at.

looking north along west street . .

the kayakers were out on the river . .

and the sea roses are all in bloom.

a warm day (and night)

breakfast with greg in the morning . .

we went on a walk into soho. i think it went up into the low 80's.

we played uno this evening and chanda won again!

it's so warm tonight that many people are staying out late (it's past midnight), walking through the streets, singing and talking and shouting. there were fireworks at 11:30!

spring with summer weather

the trees on the high line are turning a light spring green with all their young leaves. my heart leapt inside of me when i saw the view from the whitney museum window. seemingly yesterday the brown branches were all bare, and now i've turned around and everything is green.

i'm always amazed.

i stopped by the whitney for a tour of the 5th floor biennale. it was definitely helpful . . now i have information about the artists whose work hadn't held my interest at first. i can see what their influences are and understand better the message or story they're presenting. this piece is by pat oleszko. the docent shared a quote that is attributed to her, "amuse is my muse."

(i did not sleep well last night. it was too hot. so, i'm so tired today.)

tea and errands on holy thursday

janet went with me to the library where i had several books on hold and where she had to have her card re-issued as it had expired. we then went to té for tea. it's such a small and lovely tea shop and everything is delicious. i had mount a-li oolong and she had prickly ash flower herbal which i bought to have with kathy as its flavor is so different and interesting. we also had a sesame cake, red bean cake and an almond cake with citrus jam.

i then went to strand books (for a hideaway gift for chanda - something my family does each year at easter - kathy has something for greg and i but not for c), the sustainable store (for dish detergent) and lifethyme (frozen corn for the chili and some other things such as maple syrup). it was only 47 degrees today, 30 degrees less than yesterday. i was bundled up again with two sweaters, coat, hat and hand mitts. and boots. (i was wearing sandals yesterday!)

i'm dyeing eggs now (six eggs with beets and six eggs with onion skins . . except the beet color didn't work out and now i'm trying tumeric).

wishing everyone a peaceful and loving maundy thursday.

wednesday walk

it was a walk milly day . .

and it was very warm . . a little too warm for me, actually.

we walked by the chalking for daisy lopez fitze.

her information was still intact. it was written to the side of the main path, so people weren't walking on it and erasing it.

we walked into soho and to the fellini outdoor coffee bar where i ordered an iced latte.

isabella, age 17 lived here. her last name was too faded to read.

everyone was outside enjoying the warm air . .

i love this time of year because all the shops and restaurants have their doors wide open. hot summertime hasn't arrived yet to force the doors shut, protecting all that cold air conditioning.

the magnolia blossoms are so beautiful . .

waiting for her treat (we had a very leisurely walk).

----

i made a big pot of chili today for dinner for chanda and greg (enough for tomorrow too) and then met kendall at the commerce inn. when we came out the full moon was shining beautifully between the buildings. can you see it above the red awning? it was the pink paschal moon - pink for the moss phlox flower which blooms around this time in the northeast, and paschal as it's the first full moon after the spring equinox which signifies easter to be on the following sunday on the gregorian calendar. eastern orthodox churches following the julian calendar celebrate a little later . . and then there seem to be exceptions to this rule which you can read about on the old farmer's almanac.

feeling like summer

the magnolia trees are beginning to bloom in our neighborhood . .

kendall and aurèlien were in the courtyard today. aurèlien has a friend in the building and they were playing outside on such a warm spring day. it was nice to join them.

greg and i had an early dinner today at a favorite diner. greg is keeping a food diary as he's been having a few digestive issues. it's nothing very serious and keeping track of what he's been eating has been helpful.

on our way home the almost full moon was shining bright.
