morning walk and a dance performance

janet and i took a morning walk along the river to la bergamot for coffee and a pastry . .

----

this evening greg, chanda and i attended dances patrelle's spring performance at the manhattan movement and arts center theatre. they did three pieces, two choreographed by francis patrelle, the second of which was our favorite: gilbert and sullivan, the ballet! (an excerpt). morgana and chanda had parts in the original production in 2012. here and here are two posts from then. tonight's show was wonderful and i'm so glad we went.

heading to the subway and home . .

at the nutcracker gala

chanda and i attended the patrelle nutcracker gala this evening. i was not sure if i wanted to go, as i usually feel that i don't know enough people to talk with. i also never like what i wear. however, today i went out and bought a new pair of shoes at payless (they always have good, low prices) that i could wear with an old betsy johnson dress from when i was in my twenties. i didn't think i could pull that off, but a pair of black tights helped.

also, i ended up talking with several different people and really enjoying catching up with what they and their children are doing. i also enjoyed watching the hors d'oeuvres that i made quickly disappear! (i brought the same ones that i made up last year: cured sasuage on a toothpick with a grape and a slice of manchego cheese.)

mr. patrelle is holding court in his chair in the center of the room. at the time these photos were taken, the silent auction had just ended and the winners were waiting on line to make their payments while workers started packing up the food and the chairs.

in the back of the room, on the left, was a chocolate fondue. they had this last year also, and it was the highlight. i dipped strawberries and bananas into a cascading fountain of chocolate.

waiting for chanda to finish chatting with friends . .

as is this young person (waiting for her mom to finish talking also).

a snowy nutcracker

it was a wet and snowy walk to the train today on our way uptown to see the yorkville nutcracker.

the neighborhood in snow . .

and a pic from korrina of her neighborhood in snow . .

subway xylophone music at the union square station which felt very festive . .

greg and i were so busy doing last minute house straightening chores that we hadn't eaten lunch, so we had a quick bite at shakespeare and company before the matinee show.

we all met at the theatre, except for my sister and brother-in-law. greg said, we have only one extra seat, where's the extra second seat? i said, chanda is sitting in it!

i had invited brian's parents to see chanda in the nutcracker at the yom kippur celebration they had in september. they enjoyed the ballet, but maybe we'll have to do this again next year in order to see chanda . . ?!

a walk home through the snow (it was a very wet snow which lasted all day).

the tree at abingdon square.

and finally a hot meal that was so nice to come home to.

with delicious pastries brought by our guests.

we had a really nice evening together. after they left, greg washed all the dishes while i dried and put food away. i was just about to crawl into bed when chanda finally came home at 10 pm after the second show of the day.

sunday evening at the gala

this evening was the dances patrelle yorkville nutcracker gala. it was held in a new high rise on a street specifically made to accommodate five to six other high rise buildings that were put up about twenty years ago: riverside blvd. the luxury apartments look out over the west side highway and the hudson river. it's a stark mix of buildings, sidewalks and roads without a neighborhood feel. since the building itself is new, everything shone bright and clean and felt very rich. however, chanda and i both miss the venues of past galas that were held in older buildings with a medieval like architecture.

however, the lights were very pretty and the gala committee did a very nice job decorating.

there were donated vintage purses, shoes, shawls and jewelry, along with donated services (restaurant dinners, broadway shows and tea with popular company members) for the silent auction.

i contributed two types of hors d'ouvres: cucumbers with a dilly cream cheese/yogurt spread, topped by a cherry tomato, and

cured sausage with a slice of manchego cheese and a grape. i ran into korrina's brain at murray's cheese market when buying the cheese earlier in the day (the restaurant he works at is just a few blocks away and as sous chef he often buys the cheese and produce that is needed for the day). he talked me into getting the manchego as i was considering a cheddar (it would have been slightly cheaper and i thought that it wouldn't split as readily when putting it on the toothpick). i think the manchego was the way to go, because these disappeared very quickly.

the ladies who helped in the kitchen.

the event had a chocolate fondue "waterfall," a chocolatefall? bananas, marshmallows, pineapple, strawberries and cookies were set out on plates to be dipped. i had never seen this before and it was incredibly delicious.

towards the end, one of the board members thanked everyone for helping with the event,

and the administrative director, justin allen, told a few stories about the seniors who have been with the production since they were little reindeer and pages. i thought i had gotten his full speech, along with mr. patrelle's speech, but my video taking skills weren't up to such a feat. thus, for the sake of clarity i'll explain that justin begins with a story about talia and chanda rehearsing for the spring gilbert and sullivan show in 2012, when both were eleven years old. they had the steps down perfectly, but the adult women company members were messing up and justin was getting impatient (and that's where the video picks up . . ) after justin spoke, mr. patrelle shared a little about each dancer (this is when i must have stopped filming). he praised all of them for their focus and professionalism in rehearsals, specifically remembering depending upon talia's wonderful musicality one year to lead the other children in the party scene, and also will's ability to know practically everyone's parts, matteo's agility in picking up steps, and chanda's present exquisiteness as a dancer.

the four seniors: chanda, talia, william and matteo.

talia and chanda with mr. patrelle.

photos of the children when they first started with the ballet. the top left photo is of matteo as an arabian page, the top right is william as small dutch child, the bottom left is chanda in the gilbert and sullivan spring show from 2011, and the bottom right is talia as small chinese child.

chanda actually began with the production in 2008, a year before i began blogging. here's a link to 2009, when she was an angel and morgana was a gingerbread dancer.

it was a fun night and i'm glad i went this year. also, i bid on a vitamix blender at the silent auction. there weren't that many bids, and i won it for a very good price (i think most of the attendees had one already!).

these blenders are very expensive in the stores, and though it was more than the one i would have bought to replace our broken blender, it was less than half the price of a vitamix.

breakfast and gala pics

on their way to the dances patrelle gala which was held at the bowery hotel this year.

the bowery hotel is very pretty from the outside, and it looks really nice inside also. the red carpets and the gas fireplace give it a warm look. it's existence is a lesson in disparities as it sits next to one of the last drug treatment centers in the area (at least i think the center is still there). on it's opening night in 2007, there was a knife fight on the sidewalk in front of its doors. rooms go for $400 to $600. having them attend the gala there feels bittersweet. i'm not sure if all these luxury hotels and apartments are good for the neighborhood. the hotels may bring jobs, but it causes the market rental rate to go up and pushes out the current residents. capitalism does not seem to promote a sense of community, at least not in the nyc real estate market.

the requisite bathroom pic . .

it feels like a medieval castle.

a viking invasion

morgana and i walked downtown to the brookfield marina to see the draken viking ship come into port. greg and chanda didn't join us as they both had other things to do. chanda had a macbeth show, and greg  had a florida state football game he wanted to watch.

here you can see the draken on the river with the verrazano in the distance.

the ship's musicians had been brought in from the boat so they could play on the dock while the draken sailed in.

i apologize for the jumpiness of the movie. i guess i need to focus on filming and not watch what is going on. actually, i was laughing with the couple next to me as they were imagining being on the coast of england in the eighth century and seeing the ship sailing towards us, we would most likely be terrified and running away.

once in the harbor, the musicians stopped playing so we could hear the crew sing and the horn blow.

giving a cheer . .

and then they got ready to disembark . .

morgana found their many different shoes very interesting.

i'm not sure what animal horn they blow here . . .

the music was fabulous. i could have listened all day.

it was very moving and special to see her come into port. i'm so glad morgana and i were able to be there. tomorrow all of us (including korrina and brian!) have tickets for a tour on board. chanda was shocked and extremely happy. she thought she was going to have to miss seeing her because of the scottish play ballet, but we were able to get a late tour. you can check out their website for more information about the ship and it's journey: draken expedition america. you can also read about eva and her family's experience visiting the draken on the new york canal locks here.

having a bite to eat before getting on the train and heading uptown.

we came up to the alliance française as morgana had a movie to return. she took a two week beginner french course just a week or so ago, and now has a year's membership during which she can check out books and movies from their library. our visit coincided with their open house, so i was able to go upstairs with her and see the library and her classroom. they have it beautifully decorated with deep blue rugs and blond wood bookshelves. we found a few books and magazines on sale that i bought for my sister for christmas. she likes to keep up with her french.

they were having a degas exhibit and we found the little dancer. (there are twenty eight of these sculptures throughout the world.)

the title of this degas painting is young spartans exercising (this one is a print; the original is in the national gallery, london). it reminded us of our greek and roman studies when we read theras and his town.

on our way uptown again . .

morgana went to her babysitting job, and i went to meet chanda.

i treated her to a between shows meal at the asia society on park avenue at 70th street, just a few blocks from the kaye playhouse where the patrelle company is performing.

she had jasmine green tea, but i had an infusion of ginger and ginseng and lemon. it was refreshing and warming (i chose to have it hot).

lentil soup with cilantro . .

tempura with jasmine rice.

a backstage pic of chanda in her apprentice witch costume.

 looking mysterious . .

chanda and i had an uneventful ride home, but morgana's train was delayed due to an explosion in a dumpster on 23rd street. everyone kept themselves occupied: the couple is doing duolingo, the woman is grading middle school papers . .

the ladies are probably doing instagram . . . ? and i guess the man must have a good book (like my van gogh biography which i enjoy reading on the train, though i have it checked out of the library as an ebook and i read it on my phone . . isn't it nice to see this gentleman with a large hardcover book!?)

well that's all . . it was a very busy day!
