asilomar, monterey and carmel

clay, just like at indian neck on the cape . .

on indian neck, when the girls were little, we dug up some of the clay and made bowls. i tried looking for one of them before we left home, but i'm not sure where they ended up.

 pink sand verbena . .

 beach sagewort . . artemisia pycnocephala . .

 beach yarrow . .

tidestrom's lupine . .

acid seaweed, i love the beautiful dusty rose color . .

desmarestia ligulata . .

monterey hermit crab, pagurus samuelis, who prefer the shells of the black turban snail . .

a mix of beach bur and beach saltbush . .

european beach grass . .

a mix of green seaweeds that are probably very good to eat! here's a link to a blog that discusses harvesting the seaweeds found in the monterey bay area.

seaside ice plant . . "sea fig" or "hottentot fig" . . which is not native to the region.

at the monterey wharf, saying hello to gordo who was one and a half years old. such a puppy!

the bird man on the wharf . .

chanda is drinking a cup of iced jasmine tea from water and leaves cafe on the wharf. it was so fun watching them make this cup with their special water process pump machine. i was hoping they would show it on their website, but i was unable to find a video.

eating lunch on the wharf (salmon fish tacos!)

carmel-by-the-sea .  .

looking west . .

looking north with the peninsula curving west . .

carmel is always busy in the summer. we were fortunate that greg found a parking spot and a coffee shop in which he could sit and read while we went for a swim . . well, a very short swim. the water was ice cold! this always surprises me, but it shouldn't. the weather on the peninsula is cool, not hot like new york.

monterey cypress tree . .

jasmine!

at the coffee roasting company . .

they had three large photographs, two of which were of new york (one was of the flat iron building and the other of brooklyn bridge). chanda had fun picking out when the photo was taken, which she thinks could only have been a year ago as the scaffolding is down from eataly on the right, but up around the flat iron itself.

showing him the paparazzi pics we took of him when he wasn't looking . .

good-bye monterey . . until next time . .
