vesuvio bakery was founded in 1920 by the dapolito family. it officially closed about eleven years ago, but then reopened again in 2019, right before covid. i'm so glad it made it through. the renovation was accomplished by a restaurant owner from hell's kitchen, whose story you can read about in this eater article from last year (it includes a wonderful photo of the last dapolito owner, anthony, in front of the shop).
the workers are preparing the gelato and wrapping up the loaf of bread we bought (after 6 pm, the bread is half price).
this was greg's first time trying the vanilla gelato with sea salt and olive oil and the delicious chocolate cookie. on our last excursion to soho, he had opted instead for chobani yogurt.
