we met our friends at the metropolitan museum of art this afternoon. we went to see the christmas tree (a twenty foot blue spruce), which i hadn't seen since the 1970's! it still felt wonderfully just like that time period. there were no fancy gadgets or loud music. several times during the day they lower the lights and slowly bring them back up by highlighting the different figures.
the figures are neapolitan and were donated by loretta hines howard, who's daughter and granddaughter still help create the display each year.
the scene includes the nativity, the shepherds and their flocks, the magi, townspeople and a wide assortment of animals.
the figures are made in terracotta with tow and wire. the clothes were sewn and included elaborate gold embroidery, jewels and little woven baskets, shawls, and hats.
afterwards, we walked across the park in the cold wind to a warm apartment and a delicious dinner with our friends.
What a beautiful tree! I love all the scenes under the tree.
