after greg pulled out all the old caulking in the shower, i scraped out old grouting, re-caulked and then re-grouted. pluto kept me company for a good part of the day.
it was hard work. the grouting is very thick and i ended up "painting" it on . . in between each tile. not all the tiles needed to be redone, just enough of them to wear me out! i also had to consult youtube videos again. i did this work about two years ago, and had forgotten the details, such as using painters' tape for the caulking to keep it straight and neat, using a spoon to spread the caulking (or a finger dipped in water) and wiping the grouting off with a damp sponge after painting it in between each tile (and doing that quickly before it got too dry).
my problem is keeping it clean. i don't like to use bleach as it's so unfriendly to the environment. one website says that spraying periodically with white vinegar can help keep mold away (or spraying with white vinegar and baking soda when cleaning?) i may just give in and use a little bit of bleach mixed with water in a spray bottle when cleaning. korrina says she has to use that to deep clean certain areas in the kitchen at the restaurant, otherwise black mold sets in.

Wonderful work! You could try dipping a toothbrush in bleach and go over areas that look like they are getting moldy. I also don't use much bleach, but for spot cleaning with a toothbrush, this works very well.
ReplyDeleteThat's true. That's a good idea. I hope they sell small containers of bleach!
DeleteI used to put a bit of bleach in the lid of the bleach bottle and dipped the toothbrush in that.
