thursday afternoon

i met marisa for a walk to the east side to pick up our fresh food bags.

it's a good forty minute walk,

but it went very quickly with a friend to talk with. korrina arrived at the same moment, and we picked out our vegetables for the week: sweet potatoes, beets, gala apples, garlic, hot peppers, swiss chard, cipollini onions and frisée.

 so fresh!

as we were leaving, marisa noticed the art project on the wall that we pass each time we visit.

it's by our friend robyn! i hadn't realized she had one of her pieces up here!

it's filled with beautiful handmade swatches and inspiring thoughts from crafters across the country, about when they first learned to knit and what it means to them.

i knit when i am happy. i knit when i am blue. i knit when i need something challenging and different to do. when a door is closed, open a window. and that is what happened when i learned to knit eleven years ago--(at age 62). a whole new world came into view to be explored and wander through. --althea koerth, tonganoxie, kansas

what a fun and exciting find for the day.

we sat in the little river cafe for soup and sandwiches. marisa and i shared chickpea stew and a rueben sandwich. korrina had the tuna sandwich.

korrina's sweater that she made when she was about ten years old. it's from melanie falick's kids' knitting book, and the yarn is lamb's pride. it still looks so pretty.

when korrina went into work, marisa and i wandered off and walked down lexington avenue to gramercy park. it's fun walking with marisa as she looks at all the old buildings that i like to look at. we passed what used to be the washington hotel, and which is now the hillside. there was a customer representative standing outside inviting people into the bar/cafe who knew the history of the place and said it had been built in 1911, which is when my grandfather had his tavern on fourth avenue at 12th street.

after walking so far and for so long, we were ready for dessert at mah ze dahr.

it was quieter today, as the school children had already left, so we were able to sit in the front and enjoy the solitude.
