morgana and i walked to the mulberry street library today to look for a swiftly tilting planet, by madeleine l'engle. she loved a wrinkle in time, and is now devouring the rest of the stories about the murry family.

it's been really really hot . . the other day after walking to the dance school to pick chanda up from class, i was so sticky that i had to sit and cool off for ten minutes before i could even think about using the bathroom . . !
there's not much breeze in the center of town . . relief comes from blasts of cold air conditioning air slipping past people who are slipping through doors . .
part of the exciting day was watching a new air conditioning unit go in across the street on top of the new school's theatre department. the crane was huge and scared me when i first looked out the window.
morgana finished up some work in her botany book today . . these are some pages . . 
It's been hot here also, even some of my relatives in Germany report of a heat wave and a friend from NC just mentioned 100 degrees in Chapel Hill! Today it cooled off again, though.
ReplyDeleteLovely main lesson books. We finally started on mineralogy today. Since I haven't oovered it with Jonathan, and Charlotte will be in 6th grade this fall, the two of them are doing it together. So far they are enjoying it together. This is my first main lesson I'm teaching two students.
hello eva, i feel like i've grown accustomed to the heat now, but it does make me move slowly. i just don't get as much done : P
ReplyDeletewe're going to wait a little longer with mineralogy, and try to work on more geometry and start some physics. morgana is hoping to do a science class on fridays in the fall with a very good friend of hers. it would just be three students studying with a physics teacher who happens to be friends with my friend . . ! i think she's looking forward to the social aspect of it :)
i've been doing main lessons with chanda and morgana together for awhile now, and it usually goes smoothly. however, this week i've been working with just morgana and she's enjoyed being the lone student with me! i find i like both ways. i think mineralogy would be nice with the two of them together, especially when discussing the circle of fire, or going out on a field trip. does the university near you have a gem department? i remember being so excited when we were in cambridge about seven years ago, because we were wandering around and just HAPPENED to pass by harvard's mineralogical museum on oxford street! korrina was very interested in gems and stones then, and was happy to go in and explore. it was a lot of fun.
i haven't been looking in on your days lately, because i've been so busy taking chanda to her dance intensive every morning (which is the time i usually spend posting and reading) . . and then picking her up in the late afternoon . . and then it's been so hot (we don't have air conditioning), i find that i just want to read my mystery novel before falling asleep. friday is her last day, and it's observation day. greg, morgana and i will go and watch. korrina is in saco, maine, at a unitarian universalist camp she goes to every year. it's at ferry beach . . it's very beautiful.

Thanks for sharing your experiences about teaching together. I haven't done it so far because we never had a a topic that would be appropriate for both of them (they are two years apart and I do try to teach what would be taught at a Waldorf school for a particular grade). Our college here doesn't have a big science department and nothing about minerals. We would have to drive to Buffalo or Rochester for that. We also were in Cambridge 7 years ago, but just for a day, and didn't visit museums. Maybe we were there the same day, but didn't know :).
ReplyDeleteWe also don't have air conditioning and when it gets so hot I don't feel like doing very much either. We don't have many activities right now, though, so I have more time to write about our days. (Although with trying to plan next year and teaching some things that are left over from this school year, I don't feel like writing very much at night anymore).
We just found out that they are going to close our local dance studio! The next one is quite far away. Jonathan and Charlotte were quite sad about this. The teacher's husband has gotten a new job in the Oneonta area. So they are moving away.
Good luck to Chanda with her performance tomorrow. Korrina's stay in Maine sounds beautiful. I would love to travel to Maine, I have never been there.
