today i cleared out the cupboard and took stock of what dry goods i had and discarded jars of rice and cornmeal and flour that were too old. then i went shopping again with a meal plan in mind. i haven't done this in awhile. i've been shopping each day for dinner and not stocking the freezer and cupboard as in the past. i used to have a two week meal plan taped to the fridge that i followed regularly; so now i once again have items in the freezer and cupboard that i can throw together for meals without running out each day. i was talking this afternoon with my friend victoria in paris. she's in her 80's and has been taking precautions for this virus for several weeks already. she has also stocked up in case she can't go out (though, right now grocery stores in paris are still open) and today she asked me twice on the phone, "but when do i start using the provisions!?"
i think she's nixed reading the jack london and daniel defoe books . . i think it got to be too much.
she sent a note that this was today's haul.

here are the daffodils in our courtyard that popped open on friday.
You know, this is how my grandmothers must have felt during WWII (minus the bombs). Planning meals carefully, standing in lines at the stores, not knowing what the store would have, etc. We have also reached the "no-toilet-paper" stage. There was no toilet paper in Erie at Wegmans and there was none at Tops in Olean. Peter found some in a small local store and Charlotte also had some she brought back. Also, almost all meat was sold out.
ReplyDeleteYes, I was thinking about my parents and WWII all day yesterday. I'm hopeful that food supplies will restocked, and toilet tissue also! I noticed that our local butcher's supply was low, but he still had some meat in his case. The larger stores have been cleaned out here also. Our Unitarian churches are having online services today, as is a local Episcopal Church whose IG feed I follow, St. Peter's in Chelsea.
DeleteWe are still out of meat around here. Toilet paper is very low, you can sometimes get some when you go early in the morning. A friend of ours tried to get gluten-free bread for us and went to three stores in Olean (which is quite big), but none had some in stock. We also had Mass online today :).

DeleteThat's frustrating about the bread . . I wonder if you are able to order online? Greg went to get a few things yesterday morning at our local store called Brooklyn Fare . . they only allowed him one roll of toilet tissue!! :D
It is not an issue anymore, but I checked online and there was nothing.
DeleteLoved the photos from Paris, they were interesting and well done Victoria for working out by the Seine. We have an online shop due tomorrow, Sainsbury's have sent a round robin email stating they have enough food for everyone, so will have to see what turns up in our weekly shop! Much love xx

DeleteI have some more pics to put up . . some really pretty ones of Morgana walking in the countryside . . it's so pretty and there is no one around! It's so different from here . . we have too many and it's not good. With everyone home, everyone goes outside by the river.
