out east

greg and i were on the road friday morning at around 10 am. i consider that a late start. we were on the way to check on my mom's house. my sister and i are considering having some work done on the outside and we had scheduled a time to talk with our tenant who is also a contractor.

greg and i were looking forward to having lunch at the princess diner in southhampton; a diner that has been around since i was a little girl (i was looking forward to a shrimp salad sandwich). however, we found out that the owners had financial trouble and that it had closed. that was disappointing. we decided to stop, instead, in water mill at the hampton coffee company where we had the most delicious chicken salad wraps.

 a glimpse of the sea!

we dropped our bags off at the house where i found this old picture in my mom's sewing room. it's from the summer of 1997 and was taken at the duck pond in east hampton. i had set my camera on a log and pressed the timer.

 gin beach . .

gosman's dock where we had mussels and clam chowder.

our view while we ate . .

the gull above stole a big piece of a person's fish platter while they weren't looking. the gulls are sharp and so quick.

walking around the dock . .

and enjoying the sunset over the sound . .

----

unfortunately, after breakfast saturday morning, greg had a headache and started to feel achy again. he had relapsed with the flu, which he had been sick with the week before. he ended up staying in bed all day and into sunday . .

my sister and i had our meeting with the tenant . . and then we drove with my brother-in-law to ditch plains , one of our favorite beaches . .

while i'm writing this post, i am very sticky as it's hot and humid, but in these photos we were all freezing! it was cold and we weren't used to it.

 beautiful ditch . .

though i enjoyed the view at gosman's the night before, i hadn't been so happy with the mussels and clam chowder, so we tried a new place for dinner that evening. it was called hooked, and sat next to the empty health food store building (whose business had moved into the center of town). it was incredibly delicious and fresh, with zucchini, mango, white fish, red pepper, and an aioli sauce.

visiting kirk beach next to the grocery store where we bought canned chicken soup for greg.

i see now that the lighting was beautiful and i wish i had taken more pictures. however, i was very cold and only wanted to get back to the house. i had not brought a sweat shirt or any long sleeved shirt with me and was wearing an old sweater of my mom's. it's always so hot in the city, and so i've been forgetting to bring long sleeved clothing with me when going out of town! (i did the same when i went to connecticut . . )

back at the house: tea and cookies we had brought from veniero's.

it's all a bit cluttered with furniture from upstairs taking up all the room (the tenants have all their own things . . ) and it is very mildewy, sadly and unfortunately. (we decided we need to do a thorough cleaning this september or october).

we had a nice, quiet evening talking about summer holidays, montauk and cape cod. my sister is reading an article about pj's restaurant in wellfleet that was in the latest yankee magazine. it has always been a favorite of her family's since her boys were little.

----

the next morning my sister and brother-in-law left at 6:30 am to try and catch a ferry to connecticut (they waited until noon on the wait list, and then finally decided to drive around), while greg and i closed up the downstairs, said good-bye to the tenants, and got on our way home. he took two ibuprofen for the car ride.

we stopped in amagansett at jack's coffee (there's also one here on tenth street), but they were so crowded that we quickly backed out and tried hampton chutney instead, which turned out to be an excellent decision as they had the best breakfast dosa! it's a chickpea flour wrap with eggs, cheese, spinach and mango chutney inside.

greg with water sunday morning . . being too ill for coffee.

he did eat a little bit of my dosa, however, so hopefully he's not too bad and his recovery will be quicker than last time.

  1. Beautiful pictures! I like the "old" picture! I hope Greg is feeling well again. How is the basement doing?

    1. Greg is better, thanks :) The basement is so damp and mildewy and everything is strewn about. We really need to take time and clear things out. So much needs to be given away.

Such sweet memories in regard to that "old" picture!

    2. I am sorry about the basement. My parents's basement is a bit like this, but no mildew. Good luck with the work!

When looking at these old pictures, I always wonder where time went.
