it was cold and rainy today (but not cold enough for my down jacket . . i've been wearing my denim jacket with two sweaters . . ). m and c were supposed to go to an early afternoon duncan dance class, but they ended up staying home instead and working on schoolwork projects. after they finished their work they watched a little of cheaper by the dozen (with clifton webb and myrna loy) as they both just finished reading the book. korrina worked on her playwriting homework at home and then at a cafe, and then joined us for dinner. i made african peanut stew. it felt wonderfully hot and satisfying after traipsing about in the chilly night air (m and c both had ballet at 4 and 5 pm).
by day the blue will pale down into white where it touches the white of the land, after sunset it has a new circumference-orange, melting upwards into tenderest purple. but the core of blue persists, and so it is by night. then the stars hang like lamps from the immense vault. the distance between the vault and them is as nothing to the distance behind them, and that farther distance, though beyond colour, last freed itself from blue. -e.m. forster (a passage to india)

We didn't venture out today, it was not inviting and so grey! African peanut stew, was that from a Moosewood cookbook? We had ground turkey cooked with green beans, carrots, Savoy cabbage, onions, garlic, and spices. For dessert we had canned pears. I made a broccoli tart for supper tonight. Veronika did not like it because she doesn't like cream. (She used to hate all white food, now she eats a little cheese and sometimes ice cream, but that is it!). Flora complained that it was meatless. Jonathan and Charlotte still have to watch the ballet videos. I forgot today. Take care!
ReplyDeleteFinally catching up! Just love reading about your days and your culinary art in the kitchen is inspiring! Sleep deprived last night, up every two hours checking Benedict. Dave has taken them out early this morning and I'm catching up with blog reading in my pyjamas!! A shower is calling me soon though!!
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures of you and Chanda on the high line. We have sun and blue skies here today so will hopefully be out of doors at some point.
Love and hugs to you San x
hello eva, your turkey dinner sounds very good. i've never made a broccoli tart. i'll have to look up a recipe or get it from you. i'd like to make one. i've been craving broccoli lately. aren't our children's food preferences interesting!! and so many tastes to try and reach. we all like cream here . . but greg doesn't really care for beets (but i made your beet recipe and he did like that!), chanda won't eat mushrooms OR risotto (which i love and miss having) and . . hmmm . . morgana and i eat practically everything! but i do find it fascinating that veronika doesn't like white food. no cauliflower either? i hope we get some sunshine today.
ReplyDeleteFunny, Peter also doesn't care for beets, but he likes the salad. I hated mushrooms as a child. My mother quite often picked mushrooms and fried them in a little butter, but they were never washed properly and were always sandy! Maybe that's why I never cared for them. I still don't use many mushrooms for cooking. Cauliflower? It's not her favorite, but she likes it better than cream! I think it's not just the color, but also the consistency. She doesn't like creamy things either. Shall I e-mail you my broccoli tart recipe?
Deleteyes, please! i'd love that! thank you :)
Deletehello san, oh dear. it's so difficult going through the nights waking every few hours. i used to be alright with it when the girls were younger, but i find that now i don't function well at all. i hope you are able to catch a nap or two during the day. that often helped me, or helps me. it's good to hear from you. i'm glad you have some sunshine. hugs :)
