We actually celebrate Martinmass here in Denmark, but in our own way, I guess.
ReplyDeleteSt. Martin hid himself in a flock of geese, but the birds made a lot of noise, so he was discovered and killed.
We celebrate by eating the birds, although we usually eat duck, though it should be goose......
I've loved your pictures this past week, I tried posting two days ago and blogger was playing up, ah well!!

oh christine, that is really a funny story :) and i do love eating duck! morgana and i enjoy it, no one else . . so we don't have it very often. when you come to nyc again, we'll have to eat duck together!

ReplyDeleteThe Germans also eat geese and the bakers bake geese out of yeast dough. In Bonn, where I lived for several years, they would hand them out to the children after a long lantern walk for free. These lantern walks were a big affair, the whole city was closed to cars, there were big bands playing, and St. Martin was riding on a horse to the market place where he divided his coat for the shivering beggar. There were thousands of children with lanterns and everybody was singing. Such fun. I do miss this.
