it was a strange day: 35 degrees with young green leaves on the trees and the tulips so far past their bloom that they had already been pulled from the flower bed in the park. i stood on line for the fish seller at the green market and my fingers were so frozen that i had to bury them close to my body in the pockets of my down coat; except i couldn't bury my left hand as it was holding the pie i had bought from the baker's stand (the fish seller was a last minute, spontaneous decision). the line was the length of the park, with six feet between each person. it took about 15 minutes, but felt longer. however, the fish was worth it! i bought scallops and flounder. we had the scallops with soup this evening, and we'll have the flounder tomorrow. it feels like a long time since i've had fish and i had such an intense craving after buying the pie that i couldn't resist! i was also surprised at the weather today. i heard that it snowed upstate and chanda said that she saw flurries during her late afternoon walk. so it also snowed here in nyc!
the photo above has the apples i bought from the green market in the beautiful yellow ware bowl my sister bought for me during an excursion we made to the colchester consignment store when i visited her in . . i think it was late summer or september (greg is reading the margarita liberaki book now!). not more than a few minutes after taking this pic, i was in the kitchen getting breakfast together when i heard chanda yell "pluto, no!" and she disappeared from my view. i stepped out of the kitchen and looked towards her bedroom, where i thought pluto was causing trouble, but she wasn't there. i called her name and she answered from the living room, where she was on the floor with pluto amidst apples and a shattered bowl. he had pulled on the tablecloth and brought everything down on top of him. this is not unusual behavior for him, and i'm usually so careful and never put food or drinks down unless i know someone is keeping an eye on things, or i know he's watching me closely in the kitchen (hoping i'll feed him, which i usually do). well, i guess i was distracted this morning! i briefly considered trying to glue it together, but it really was in too many pieces. maybe i'll be able to find another on etsy or ebay one day, i don't know . . i felt a little sad as it was a reminder of a special time together, but . . ah well . . what can you do?
the cheese i bought today from our new cheese vendor . . it's a raw sheep's milk cheese.
breakfast . .
and strawberry rhubarb pie again!
scallops and soup for dinner . .
and a new game that we got for christmas: wordical.
i actually won! i didn't think it was possible as greg found his words so quickly, but we used a different scoring method than the game suggested and the z and x and q i had gave more points. it was fun. i enjoyed it. i hope chanda wants to play again.
this evening, before dinner, i watched the return of the sith, episode three. i can't believe i've never seen it! it was much better than i expected (the dialogue is better than episode two). i understand so much more now. next is solo and then rogue one.

So it was cold in the city as well! It was warmer here again today, but still not really inviting. Have you made the flounder yet? We cannot buy any good fish right now, just some really bad tilapia and salmon in the supermarket in the next village. Do you have to make words with the letters? I am so sorry about the bowl! These cats can be awful sometimes. Kai would always jump on the kitchen counter and "sample" whatever he could find, but he never knocked things down. Julius used to jump onto our table. Once he burned his tail on a candle and did not even notice it! We had to pull him away from the flame. I always thought all animals are afraid of fire . . . This morning we found a squirrel's tail in our backyard, but no squirrel. Very strange. Maybe the fox got the squirrel? Anyway, Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny about Julius and the candle flame. Yes, these cats are crazy! It amazes my sister and I as the cat we had growing up was always so good and respectful! She would never even consider going on the tables or counters. Of course, her life was very different. She was always put outside when we left the house. There was never a kitty litter box. When we traveled, she lived outside and neighbors took care of her (and several summers we traveled by car to CA and back -- being gone for a whole month -- she was always home when we returned). These cats must sense our acceptance of them! (Especially indoor cats.)

Yes, for the card game, you make words with the cards and the letters that were rolled on the die.
Maybe our cats are too spoiled these days. We had cats too, and they would never jump onto a table. One of our cats did jump into my little sister's cradle, though, to comfort her when she was crying.
DeleteNow Julius got a chipmunk and is trying to get more. Every spring he finds some young animals he gets. It is awful. Normally he is bringing us baby rabbits.
