saturday green market and a walk around the neighborhood

so many delicious things came home with me today from the green market . . including this little itty bitty apple.

the line for the fishmonger . .

the new cheese stand (the old vendor went out of business . . sadly for me as she made my favorite maple syrup, besides so many amazing cheeses).

----

after lunch, greg and i decided to go for a walk . .

it's beginning to feel a little more normal . . many restaurants and cafes are opening for take out, and some are able to put out benches and chairs for socially distanced seating.

the allium are blooming now that the tulips have had their day . .

someone decorated the front doors of my friend marisa's building . .

here's the house that had such elaborate halloween decorations . . they wrote "hang in there nyc" on their brownstone.

more allium at fifth avenue and 11th street . .

we considered walking to veniero's . . but it was very warm and we had gotten such a late start (it was 2 pm by now, and we had thought we would go in the morning) and i think we were out of shape. when we reached fifth avenue, greg said "i haven't been this far east since march." it has been TWO months since we went on such a walk. two months. i don't think we were physically out of shape, i think we were emotionally out of shape. also, the masks are warm to wear, though i would pull mine down when there was no one walking in front of me, or walking toward me. i actually felt happy today, as i felt for the first time that we could get through this; that nyc could work out a new way of living for as long as it takes until the virus stops infecting so many people, whether that's through a vaccine or herd immunity or . . i don't know . . but the sunshine and warmth of the day lifted all of our spirits. i am well aware that this autumn may feel very different . . and i don't look forward to shorter days. i think we all crave sunshine. chanda said that emily thought that the city felt like a beach town, as everyone was out but no one was rushing around like we usually do, because there was nothing to rush to! no offices, no libraries, no sit down cafes or restaurants, no meetings, no performances, no doctor visits, no bookstores, no clothes, shoes or jewelry shopping (except online).

we're just walking and riding and enjoying the weather.

on the way home we stopped in front of the pinkberry shop and had a discussion about whether we thought it was open. there wasn't an "open" sign, only notices about how to enter ("must have a mask and stand six feet apart from others"), and we couldn't see anyone behind the counter. we finally tried pulling on the door handle and i called "hello." a woman answered and came out from the back and so we bought a pint of pomegranate to go. greg was happy then. he loves frozen yogurt dessert. we stopped at elm health food store for raspberries and strawberries, and had it for a snack when we got back . .

which meant that we had a late dinner and a late game of bananagrams afterwards.

  1. I always love your street photography, it's as if I'm really there with you :-) So glad that you are feeling lighter in your spirit, your city has really been through some very dark and difficult days. Sending much love to you all xx
