chanda and i visited the high line on wednesday morning, april 29th.
we found beautiful tulipa lady jane which is similar to tulipa clusiana, collected by carolus clusias in the 1500's in turkey and spain and who then became curator of the leiden botanical garden in the netherlands (this information was found on an interesting blog here; wikipedia info can be found here). . this was our first year observing them.
tulipa lady jane is a variety of the species clusiana. it's a dwarf tulip with small bulbs that can be tucked into tiny crevices and seems to have two personalities . . it's closed soft pink tube, and it's open sunny smile. they were fun to find and we think they're very cheery and welcoming after such a long winter! i think they're rather hardy perennials that are very easy to grow. maybe we'll try putting some in our building's courtyard garden this fall. they would look pretty alongside the yellow dwarf daffodils we have.
on another note: the high line has many new buildings going up along its sides . .
here are two of them that are almost finished. we really like the gardens tucked into the corners of this one.
