tea cake

i had five lemons and was trying to decide what to make. korrina suggested lemon bars, and i thought i had a few recipes to choose from for that, but in reality, i didn't. i then found a recipe in my ciao italia cookbook for a sicilian lemon cake, but it called for almonds to be ground for flour, and i didn't have enough almonds. then, i discovered lemony turmeric tea cake from my new york times cooking email, and lemon drizzle cake from the book of afternoon tea, from san and family. i decided on the turmeric cake tonight, but will make the lemon curd from the afternoon tea book tomorrow. i love lemon curd, and finished my jar that chanda had brought back from her january london visit.

in the above pic you can see very brown looking lemon slices on top of the cake. i tried making candied lemon from the ciao italia book. i only had brown sugar, so they're a little strange looking, but incredibly delicious! in fact, by the time we had the cake, i had already eaten a whole lemon's worth of candied lemon slices on my own. we had the cake after having leftover barley soup for dinner, while we watched the "subway" episode of seinfeld.

  1. So funny you ate those lemons before you ate the cake. Did you just dip them into sugar and baked them?

    1. I combined about a cup of brown sugar (it was supposed to be regular sugar, but I didn't have any) and water and let it simmer lightly until the granules had gone, then I added the lemon slices. I let them simmer for about ten to fifteen minutes, and then took them out with tongs and let them drain on a plate for awhile . . candied lemon slices . . they were so delicious!
