on labor day monday we said good-bye to everyone and headed up I91 to Vermont to visit our friends. it was 7:30 in the morning, and there were not many cars on the road. it was a nice day to travel.
through my friend's window you can see the adirondack mountains and lake champlain in the distance.
morgana and chanda are swinging on the tire swings at the vermont country store. one of our rest stops along the way.
we first "discovered" the store with korrina in 2004 or 5 when we were returning home from vermont . . we were heading back to aunt kathy's to pick up jack. it makes a good rest stop . . with coffee and cheese tastings and . . sweets!
we had a delicious barbecue upon our arrival . . organic corn and sausage, pickles, and sauerkraut.
korrina took the train up in the evening! my friend drove me to pick her up . . which i was happy about. those country roads are very dark at night and i wasn't accustomed to the route!
our friend had a physical therapy session in the morning, so while waiting we walked up the road to visit the soapworks . .
. . and then the knitting store!

there were apple trees on the way to the knitting store . .
with some very tasty apples on them.
we had italian sodas, coffee and tea at the hungry mind cafe in middlebury.
korrina and i worked on our knitting . .
marisa worked on her ipad . .
she can film and take pictures with it too . . which i find endlessly fascinating.
we stopped for sandwiches at otter creek bakery. i thought these pastries looked fun to eat: vermont mountain peaks!
we walked over the bridge and past the falls . . i think korrina got some really beautiful shots of them.
i like shopping at the middlebury food coop . . and i came away with a fold-up coop bag to keep in my purse for emergencies.

she grows basil, lemon basil, chard, lettuce, tomatoes, tomatillos, squash, mint, and sage.
also, beautiful sunflowers and black-eyed susans . .

the next day we went swimming in bristol . .
the water is always very cold!!! i usually join in . . but not today . .
all of us liked chanda with her hair braided around her head . .
at 4:30 i drove korrina to bristol's town green to meet my nephew, jason. he lives in burlington and they met to go hiking up mt. abraham. they had a great time and joined us later at night (9 pm!) for dinner. they had a late start as jason teaches english at a high school in colchester, just north of burlington, so they went when he was finished for the day.

and a campfire . . finally. they had been rained out the night before.
they roasted marshmallows and ate s'mores.
the next morning, morgana, korrina and i were up and out early to take korrina to the train station in castleton. at one point we were behind the school bus (7:15 am) and enjoyed seeing the school children running out of their homes to get in the bus. some of the children ran to the bus with lots of energy, a few others dragged their feet . . and one dragged her lunch bag and coat . .
we could see it off in the distance.
they had one last campfire, and then we headed home the next morning (friday). their friend came with us, as she had to register for classes on saturday the eighth. chanda began orchestra rehearsal at third street that day. morgana had to get back as she and her dad had tickets to see warhorse friday night.
